Michael Hayden Obituary
Michael Wayne Hayden passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous 2½-year battle with colon cancer.
Mike was born in Rochester, Minnesota, on November 18, 1954, the eldest of six children. Due to his father's career in aviation, Mike moved frequently during his childhood before the family eventually settled in Owatonna. He graduated from Owatonna High School in 1972.
It was at a party in Rochester where Mike met the love of his life, Susan (Sue) Kuka. The two were married for 47 wonderful years and raised three children together: James, Justin, and Jordan. Mike dedicated over three decades of service to Mayo High School before retiring.
A passionate outdoorsman, Mike was always happiest when hunting and fishing-especially when sharing those experiences with his children and grandchildren. He loved teaching them the skills he cherished and spending quality time with them. Whether he was working on cars, snowmobiles, ATVs, or boats, Mike always enjoyed a project, especially with family by his side.
Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Mike could always be counted on for a good laugh-even if he could be a little stubborn at times. He loved to travel, with one of his favorite memories being a family trip to Las Vegas to celebrate his 70th birthday. He also cherished time spent up north fishing with his family. Mike enjoyed a good comedy movie or show, with favorites including The Office and Seinfeld.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; his children James, Justin (Katie), and Jordan (Frank) Hoffman; and his cherished grandchildren Kaleb, Liam, Lucas, Lacey, Everly Hayden, and Norah Hoffman. He is also survived by many in-laws, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father, Derald; granddaughter, LillyAnn Hayden; and several aunts, cousins, grandparents, and in-laws.
Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mike's oncology team at Mayo Clinic and his hospice care team for their compassionate support and dedication throughout his journey.
