Dr. Ronald L. Thommarson passed away after a long illness on June 10, 2020 spending his last days peacefully and surrounded by family.
Ronald Lee Thommarson was born in Post, Texas on Jan. 2, 1940 to Robert L. "Bob" Thommarson and Inez Thommarson (nee Peel). Bob's time in the Army and posting to Camp Roberts during World War II brought the family to settle in the rural community of King City, Calif., in Monterey County.
Ron attended King City High School and lettered in football and baseball for the Mustangs. Ron went on to attend UC Santa Barbara, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated with a B.S. in Physical Chemistry in 1962. It was at UCSB that Ron met his true love, Leanne. They were married in January 1963 in Montecito, Calif.
In 1966, Ron received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at UCSB. After a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Ron went on to work as a research scientist in the Southern California aerospace industry and settled in Newport Beach.
At age 35, Ron embarked on a second career, and his true calling, in medicine. Ron earned his M.D. from UC Irvine Medical School in 1979 and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center in 1982. Ron practiced Internal Medicine in Newport Beach for the next 30 years. He was recognized as a distinguished physician, serving on Hoag Hospital's Medical Executive Committee and as Chairman of Internal Medicine for several years. Ron counted many fellow physicians among his patients and was a real "doctor's doctor."
Ron retired from medical practice in December 2011. In retirement, Ron enjoyed playing golf with son RJ and grandson Braden, and watching granddaughter Chiara's many sporting events.
Ron was an avid golfer and enjoyed teeing it up at the Newport Beach Country Club for over 30 years with his many colleagues and friends. He enjoyed regular golf trips with his fellow Delts from UCSB at courses from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
Ron is survived by his wife of 57 years, Leanne; son, Ronald J. Thommarson of Coto de Caza (Shawn); grandchildren, Braden (21) and Chiara (19); brother, Wendell ""Wink"" Thommarson (Pat) of Grants Pass, Ore.; and four nieces and nephews (Robin, Denise, Nicole and Blair) and their families.
Ron's family, friends, and colleagues will gather for a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m. on July 31, 2021 at the Newport Beach Country Club on 1 Clubhouse Drive in Newport Beach.
