Mr. Russell Andy Bauer, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Born on August 12, 1947, he was the son of the late Russell Andy Bauer, Sr. and Louise Frey Bauer. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Earl Dennis Bauer.
Born in Hemingway and a lifelong resident of the Andrews area, Russell lived a humble life defined by integrity and service to others. He was a graduate of Andrews High School and the University of South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. An intelligent and inquisitive man, he had a deep appreciation for learning, literature, and the written word.
Russell's life was a reflection of the words found in 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." He was a member of Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Russell was self-employed as a handyman and plumber and was well known throughout the community for his dependability and honesty. With a heart of compassion, he never hesitated to lend a helping hand often performing work for those unable to pay, simply because it was the right thing to do.
"Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." This quote from Edgar Allan Poe, Russell's favorite author, speaks to his imagination, curiosity, and the thoughtful way he viewed life. Russell was always learning, thinking, and seeing the meaning in the small things. He enjoyed reading and poetry, collecting old books, and engaging in spirited games of Scrabble, a pastime he particularly cherished. He also loved watching Jeopardy and rarely missed an episode, often knowing many of the answers before the contestants could respond. His love of language and humor endeared him to all who shared his company.
Though he never married or had children of his own, Russell was considered family by those closest to him. He is lovingly remembered by Becky Timmons of Pawleys Island, Jenny Cox (Ritchie) of Georgetown, and Daphney Bone (Thomas, Jr.) of Andrews, whom he loved like daughters and who, in turn, loved him like a father. His presence in their lives was one of steady guidance, kindness, laughter, and unconditional affection.
He is survived by numerous cousins and close friends.
Russell will be remembered for his quiet strength, gentle nature, and unwavering compassion. His legacy of service and love will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. "He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8
