Oscar Howard Sr.

Kinston - Oscar Howard Sr., 82, passed away Friday, June 4, 2021.

The funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, June 9, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 3006 Carey Road, Kinston, NC 28501. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

A native of Lenoir County, Oscar was born December 14, 1938, to Pompey and Mabel Brown Howard. He graduated from Southwood Highschool and retired with 30 years of service after working for the State of North Carolina as the Head of Subsurface Investigation.

Oscar was a loving man who never said an unkind word to others and had a jovial personality. He would tell his grandkids, "So glad you got to see me." They always agreed. People may not have known his name, but they knew his smile as he never met a stranger. He looked forward to his weekly lunches with his son and could often be found eating at Fat Baby's. Oscar also enjoyed sitting on the porch and visiting with neighbors, watching the squirrels, and looking for ladybugs. He loved his family fiercely and watching his great-grandbabies play. Oscar also loved "supervising" and would ride his scooter over to his daughter's house to make sure his son-in-law was using enough nails on projects.

In addition to his parents, Oscar is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Marlei Wetherington; great-grandson, Tanner Kinnett; and brothers Ralph, Herman, and Aaron Howard and Alton Alphin.

Oscar is survived by his wife of 61 years, Katherine Victoria "Vicki" Howard; daughter, Marva and her husband, Edward Wetherington; son, Oscar Jr and wife, Lisa Howard; siblings, Paul Howard of Clarksville, Tennessee, Leslie Howard of Trenton, Etta Mae Dixon, of Snow Hill, Elaine Sanders of Parkersburg, West Virginia; granddaughter, Jessica and her husband, John Kinnett; grandson, Christopher and wife, Allie Wetherington; granddaughter, Stormy and husband, David Smith; granddaughter, Laura and husband, Travis Edwards; granddaughter, Emily Howard; and 10 great-grandchildren.
