Mary Ensman Obituary
Hansville - Mary Anne (Nyhus) Hudson born April 28, 1944 in Bremerton, WA has passed away at age 76 on April 22, 2021.
She was married to Frederick Emil Ensman June 12, 1965 in Ferndale, WA. She is survived by her three children, Frederick T. Ensman, Anne Marie S. Russell, William N. Ensman, and her five grandchildren.
She earned her BA in Education in 1967, and worked in the Vancouver School District, Vancouver, WA. In 1969 she moved to Columbia River High School as the librarian, and earned her MD in Library Sciences in 1980. She retired in 1992 and moved to Hansville, WA. From 1994-present she moved to Santa Cruz, CA. In her final years she continued teaching in the North Kitsap School District, from Hansville, WA.
We will be having a Celebration Of Life, at the Driftwood Key Clubhouse/Waterfront Pavilion, 37583 Vista Key Dr. NE, Hansville, Washington 98340 on August 14, 2021 at 1:00.

Aunt Mary was a kind, beautiful soul and I have no doubt she was smiling yesterday as family and friends shared stories and tears, memories and beers.. I believe everyone has a piece of her love where she touched their lives and her grace still lives in those people. Her positive attitude and loving ways are so visible in her children and will shine on through their eyes. Praying for the Ensman family for that grace and gentle non- judging love that Mary and her husband (Fred) both shared in their communities and all the lives they touched. Two hearts together again as I have no doubt they are together again, in Heaven, in His love.
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may all who knew Mary, continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
Praying for comfort in memories of Aunt Mary and that the grace and smiles she shared will stay alive in the lives of her children. Rest in peace Aunt Mary.

Mary and Fred and their children lived near Gary and me in Felida near Vancouver. Fred Jr. was a classmate of our son, Greg, all through school. They played Little League ball together one year, and the year he was in 1st grade I “baby-sat” Fred Jr. for an our or so after school. I even substituted a few times for Mary after I retired as a school librarian. I know Fred Jr. became a teacher like his parents, but we lost contact after they left Vancouver. Greg became a school librarian also, and is just finishing his 29th year for the Tacoma SD. We always admired Fred Sr. for his courageous position during the teachers’ strike in the Evergreen SD in the 1970’s. Bargaining for teachers was not easily won, but Fred pushed the process forward. Sending our condolences to all the family belatedly , but sincerely.

Mary was my grandpa Steve Sigurdson's niece. We spent a lot of time as children visiting at Steve and Fay's or going out to the farm in Ferndale. Tom and Einar were there too. My sister Bonnie Toppen remembers her too. They took a trip to Santa Cruz when they were teens. Mary was always nice and friendly. We were sad to hear of her passing, Vickie Metivier Kruse.

Mary Ensman was one of the most helpful and patient educators I worked with my first year teaching at Columbia River. She was always willing and able to tackle any requests from both teachers and students. I returned to River a few years later and worked with her again until her retirement. She and the library were the heart of that school. My most sincere condolences to all the family.

I am a member of Columbia River High School Class of 1986. I used the library much for study and for visiting with friends. Mary, or Mrs. Ensman as we knew her, was always there to help and provide a great environment for her students. Thank you, Mrs. Ensman. I wish your family much comfort in these difficult times.

Mary, Fred, and I began teaching together at Covington Junior High. We had some great times. I miss Fred and now I will miss Mary. May she Rest In Peace
