Clifford Douglas Croom

Knoxville, TN

Clifford Douglas Croom, age 64, passed away at Fort Sanders Medical Center Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 3:50pm after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Clifford was a resident of Los Angeles, CA, born and raised in Knoxville, TN where he graduated with honors from Holston High School. He received a full academic scholarship to Dartmouth College and graduated at the top of his class with a Bachelor's Degree in German. Clifford was a professional translator and spoke 7 languages, including German, Russian, French, Spanish, and Tongan.

Clifford utilized his linguistic expertise in the following capacities: as an interviewer for the RAND Corporation; as a tour guide at the United Nations; a translator for the State Department; a multi-language auditor for Deutsche Bank; and listening in on communications in the field as a U.S. Army Intelligence Officer. He was President of Emancipated Speech Projects, a full-service translation and interpreting company.

Preceded in death by parents, Alice Beckham Croom and William Henry Croom III; sister, Shirley Jean Croom-Moore; aunts, Eliza Beckham and Isabel Fish and cousins, Wilson Clemmons and Ernest Blackmon.

Survived by sisters, Louise Martin, Philadelphia, Sylvia Sterling, Knoxville, Peggy Tene Croom, Pittsburgh, and Kukhautusha Croom, Los Angeles; brothers, William Croom IV, Knoxville and Paul Croom, Poland; sisters-in-law, Jackie Croom, Ada Croom and Anna Croom; brother-in-law, George Thomas Moore, Jr.; nieces, Alyse Denine Person, Arshell Croom, LaShawn Alvarez, LaCrisha Croom, and Alice Croom; nephews, Johnny Skrine, George "Tommy" Moore III, William Croom V, Jered Croom, Paul Croom II, Leslie DuWayne Sterling II, and Matthew Croom; great-nieces, Sanquez Goodman, Toni Benn, Alice Croom, Nadira Moore, Jalisha Smith, Eliza Croom, K'Niya Croom, Naila Schoeberger, Sojourner Croom, Yasmine Croom, Adriana Croom, Mary Alvarez, and Zuni Croom; great-nephews, Shomari Moore, Joey Smith Jr., A'Montez Croom, Flourian Croom, Zamari Wilson, and Daylen Smith; cousins, Valerie Clemmons, Ricky Clemmons, Broderick Clemmons, Kenneth Clemmons, and Sabrina Clemmons Tutstone.

Family will receive friends, 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Jarnigan's Chapel; funeral service, 12:00 noon, David Dupree, Officiating.

Interment East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery,

I had no knowledge of Clifford after he left A-E, but I always remembered him. He was genuine and brilliant even then. He always challenged us to have "higher thoughts", when most of us couldn't see beyond our teenage obsessions. Our prayers and condolences to this family and may the memories of your loved one bring you peace.
