Emily Rose Obituary

Emily Fretz Rose

Knoxville - Emily Fretz Rose, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 after catching the virus which weakened her lungs and which was immediately followed by pneumonia. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, D. Morton Rose, Jr and has gone to heaven to be with her Lord. She graduated from St. Anne's School in Charlottesville, VA., and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Her employment opportunities included reporter of the Knoxville Journal in the society department; then NBC and flying squad at B. Altman department store, both in NYC, and back home at Millers Department Store as fashion coordinator. She held membership in many groups and organizations and served enthusiastically as president or board member. She was an active member of the Knoxville Garden Club and thoroughly enjoyed creating, along with the hard labor of her husband, a backyard woodland garden of flowers, shrubs and meandering paths. She grew up in a family where music was enjoyed with varying degrees of piano skill. Her mother was a classical musician and was presented in her own recital at the age of fourteen; her older brothers played Boogie-Woogie; her father played Community All-Sing songs; and she tried to play it all. She is survived by her husband D. Morton Rose, Jr.; nieces and nephews Ellyn F. Murdick (Kent) of Mobile, AL and their children Amanda, Rebecca, Genevieve and Oliver; Tom Fretz (Carolyn) of Southborough, MA; Katherine Rose and daughter Emily Rose Morgan, of Madison, VA; and Jim Rose, Jr. (Julie) of Fletcher, NC and children Andrew, Alex (Katee) and Daniel. Due to the current health concerns a private graveside service will be held for the family conducted by Pastor Tim Reynolds of the Second Presbyterian Church. A Memorial service will be held at a later date due to possible exposure of the virus. Memorial may be to the 200th Scholarship Fund initiated by Second Presbyterian Church, 2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919, and administered by the East Tennessee Foundation for students at U.T. and/or Maryville College and a strong bond has exited all through these years. This fund was created in 2018 at the time of the Celebration of the 200th year of Second Presbyterian Church's historical presence in the community.
