I was privileged to study under Dr. Lusby at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in the years, 1958-1960. He was the best and most inspiring teacher I have known. He was a brilliant, insightful, and engaging man, and as students, we were in awe of him. At the same time, he was personable, caring, and inspirational. He became the role model for me during my entire career. I greatly regret that I did not see him after I left Miami University in 1960. He remains the best and most inspiring teacher I have known.

Dear Donna, Beryl & Rick,
I am so very sorry that the beautiful, shining light that was Stan is no longer with us. He had a gentle kindness in all his interactions that made us feel better about ourselves. His Spirit will always reside in our hearts and influence our thoughts. Godspeed, Stan.

I was very saddened to hear of Dr. Lusby's passing, though he is probably having a great time! I am another of Dr. Lusby's students who switched my major to Religion (at Miami U in the 60's) in order to take almost every course he offered. I didn't care what the course was; I just wanted to "sit at his feet". I was glad to reconnect with him in person a few years ago and stay in touch via email up until this summer.
Thank you, my dear friend and mentor. Love to the family.

Stan was my beloved professor, teacher and friend at Miami U in the 60's. He generously gave his students wisdom and also unconditional love. He inspired me to go on to the U of C Divinity School and later to pass on to others, through 40 years of Social Work, what he gave me during those four years. I am grateful I could visit with him last year in Blowing Rock and let him know how much he changed my life. His thoughts, inspiration and love live on in all the children and families' lives I have touched through my work.

Dear Beryl, Donna, and Rick:
My prayers are with you all. This week, memories of Stan in Oxford, Marten River, and Knoxville filled my head and heart, bringing tears, but mostly smiles. I'll miss most his always warm handshakes, bellowing laugh, and the Knoxville surrogate parent role he filled for me since the day I arrived here. Ever ready for a joke or intellectual discussion, to talk or listen, or to shower love and attention on family, friend, pet, or complete stranger. These are the subjects he "taught" to all he came in contact with, each and every day. Godspeed, dear friend.

I took one of Stan Lusby's classes on a lark and it changed my life. He taught with respect, enthusiasm, insight and humor. "This spring break, as you immerse yourselves in the waters of chaos and imbibe the sacred fluids, don't forget to read your assignment..."
Stan, thank you for spending time on this earth. You have made a difference, a positive difference, in this world.

As others have said in this guestbook, I also changed my major to Religion because of Lusby. I also went to Miami Univ and did an M.A. because of Lusby. I spent ten years in Asia because of things Lusby started and now live in the Middle East because of them. Thanks for ruining my life in such a beautiful way.

Stan Lusby was my first religion professor at UT, and after his class, I changed majors and eventually ended up with an MDiv. He was a phenomenal teacher; his hard work and dedication to his students was always clear, and caused all of us to work twice as hard for him. Cheers, Stan the Man.

Stan was a mentor and a friend, always kind and supportive to a junior colleague eager for guidance from an intellectual and educational giant. His retirement impoverished the University as his passing impoverishes humanity. Yet, he lives on in the hearts of his colleagues and students.

To you, Donna, my friend, and to your mother and Keith and Rick: how sorry I am that you have lost the physical presence of your father, husband, and father-in-law. But how glad I am that you had that presence so long and so close -- and that you will continue to have his influence on your lives and your memories of him. I admire very much the care and love that you pulled together to give him in his last months.

Words cannot begin to explain how sad it is to hear that Stan has passed away. A friend from the mid 1940's and so many cherished memories. Bruffie, Janie and I always looked so forward to our visits with you and your family. Stan will be forever missed but will always remain in our hearts.
My deepest sympathy to you and your family,

I remember Stan Lusby from his days of cottaging in Marten River, Ontario, Canada together with his wife Beryl and wonderful children, Donna, Dave and Rick. While he taught esoteric subjects to countless university students over the years, he taught ME how to water ski!

To the Lusby family,
My name is Lisa and Mr. Lusby was one of my occupational therapy patients at Select Specialty Hospital. I very much enjoyed working with him, as he was so motivated and positive despite his condition. We had wonderful conversations and shared stories about Canada and I will always remember what a kind man he was. And as his family you all have been so very supportive and willing to do anything for him, which is refreshing coming from a therapist's perspective. May God Bless you all during this time and always remember the wonderful knowledge and blesses that he bestowed upon others during his life and career.
Sincerely,
Jeff Brumley

Stan's obituary would be 10 pages long if it were to list all the students, colleagues and friends who loved him. His passion for the "life of the mind" and the study of religion was exciting and infectious. He inspired me and others I know to pursue ideas, subjects and careers with equal enthusiasm. He made the world a better place.
