HOWE, GARY ALAN - age 56 of Powell, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009 at 8:22 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He went peacefully with his family by his side, after a year long hospital stay due to complications resulting from a motorcycle accident on June 18, 2008. He fought a very courageous battle which he lost, but yet won the war. He was a member of Callahan Road Baptist Church. Gary was a master union electrician and was awarded a trip to the Southern Electrical Convention in New Orleans for having the highest grade average. He was a member of the IBEW local 270 of Oak Ridge for 26 years. Was also an instructor and taught apprentice classes for the union at local 270. He was commissioner of football for two years at Powell Levi Field and coached football and softball for 11 years. He also kept the stats in the press box for Powell High School for several years. His hobbies, which he loved, were motorcycle riding, carpentry, and mechanics...there was not anything he could not fix and was very meticulous with his work. Preceded in death by mother, Mabel Howe; grandmothers, Birdie Howe, Willie Mitchell; aunts, Gladys Poythress, Ethel Howe, Blanche Howe, Maude Howe, Marietta Fletcher, Leo Clark: and nephew, Jeff Schuman. Survivors: wife of 33 years, Ellie Baker Howe; daughter, April Nicole of Powell; son, Thomas James (T.J.) of Powell and his fiancée, Ginny Thomas of Knoxville; son, Spencer Alan Howe of Powell; dad, Thomas Newton Howe of Talbot, TN; brother, Robert Howe of Gray TN; sisters, Barbara Deen of Amarillo, TX, Jerrie Howe of Dumas, TX; sister in-law, Cathy Bond (Alan) of Powell; nieces and nephews, Mary Lynn Burnett, Rance Burnett (Lacie); Bret Baer (Desiree), Tom Schuman (Angie), all of Texas, Jennifer Gregory and Christy Wise (Chris) of Knoxville, Alyssa Bond of Powell. He had many wonderful friends. Two of his best friends were Steve Thrasher and Steve Swafford. Family and friends will meet at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Stevens Mortuary to go in procession to Greenwood Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers are Steve Thrasher, Steve Swafford, Rodney Stephens, David Grisby, Phil Kidd, Joe Marshall, Larry Bailey, Rick Carnes, David Ogle and Chris Davis. Memorials may also be made to the Youth Fund at Callahan Road Baptist Church, 1336 Callahan Road, Knoxville, TN 37912. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 8:00 p.m. at Callahan Road Baptist Church. Rev. Roy Gose and Rev. Marc Sasser officiating. Serving the family: Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at N. Broadway. Mr. Howe's guest book is available at www.stevensmortuaryinc.com

Ellie and family...what an unexpected shock when I opened the paper and found Gary's picture there. It has been many years since I worked with Gary in the pressbox for all of Powell's homegames, and recall with great joy the good fellowship we shared during those years. How Gary put up with me so long I'll never really know. I guess I'll have to ask him one day! Please know that you guys are in my prayers and know that God is too wise to be wrong and too kind to be cruel. EVERYTHING fits into His divine plan. What a blessing Gary was to ALL of us. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

WHAT AN ODD WAY FOR PATHS TO CROSS AS OURS. BUT SO MANY TIMES I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THE BLESSINGS THAT KNOWING YOU AND HOWIE HAVE BROUGHT TO MY LIFE. YOU ARE A WONDERFUL PERSON AND I KNOW THAT GARY KNEW HOW BLESSED HE WAS TO HAVE A WIFE, FRIEND,LIKE YOU. YOU ARE AMAZING! PLEASE LET THE YEARS OF HAPPINESS COMFORT YOU . AND REMEMBER THE RAIN TO APPRECIATE ALL THE GOOD. MOST OF ALL KNOW YOU AND THE KIDS HAVE DONE EVERYTHING POSSIBLE SINCE GARY'S ACCIDENT. KEEP THE FAITH THAT HAS BROUGHT YOU THROUGH TO THIS POINT. KNOW YOU ARE LOVED AND RESPECTED BEYOND WORDS.

July 9, 2009

Ellie, TJ, April & Spencer,
There's a song called Home Free. You may know it but part of the lyrics are: Home Free eventually, at the Ultimate Healing we will be Home Free. Gary is now Home Free & he has received the Ultimate Healing. We are so sad that a friend that we have both known since childhood has been taken from us, but we rejoice to know that his suffering is over. Ellie, you are exactly what God instructs us to be as a spouse. April, TJ & Spencer, God most certainly smiled down upon your Mom & Dad when he chose to give them the 3 of you. As a family you have stood strong & united & that is an example for all of us. Take care of each other and be assured that today & in the days to come, you will be in our thoughts & in our prayers.
We Love You,
