George Konomos Obituary

George Konomos

Knoxville, TN

George Konomos, age 89, of Knoxville, Tennessee, formerly of Dayton, Ohio passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, November 23, 2017 at his home surrounded by family.

George Konomos is a true American success story. George was born in Kollines, Greece located near Tripolis in the beautiful Pelopennese region of Greece. As a youngster, George survived Nazi occupied Greece during WWII. After proudly serving for 2 years in the Greek military, he set off for the USA with a hopeful adventurous spirit and only $20 in his pocket and thus began his higher education studies at Auburn University where he earned his B.S. degree in Engineering and Computer Science and subsequently he earned a masters degree in Engineering at The Ohio State University. After graduation, George worked for the Department of Defense planning and designing the laser and electronic systems for various Air Force projects including the F-15 and F-16 airplanes at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. His hobbies included photography, computers, traveling, and spoiling his grandchildren with their most treasured dreams.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Eleni Kakleas and father, Constantinos Papaoiconomou; as well as brother, Cristos Papaoiconomou and sister, Anna Stanios.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Pefronia Pashalis Konomos; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Bradford Kamlet of Columbus, Ohio, daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Spiros Asimakopolos of Athens, Greece; and son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William and Jennifer Cloyd Konomos of Knoxville, Tennessee; and grandchildren: Andreas Asimakopolos, Kristina Asimakopolos, Niko Kamlet, Amelia Konomos, Olivia Kamlet, George Kamlet and Andrew Konomos; as well as his sisters, Angela Argyropoulou, Evgenia Papantonopoulou and Mimika Katzatzidou; and cousin, Grace Conomos in Defiance, Ohio.

A private family service will be held at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio with Father Joseph Gingrich officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 500 Belmonte Park North Dayton, Ohio 45409.
