Homer Wood Obituary

WOOD, HOMER GLENN - age 93, retired City of Knoxville Street employee, went home to be with his Lord and Jesus on Monday, June 6. He was born April 28, 1918 in Campbell County. Homer accepted Jesus as his Savior at Olivet Baptist Church in 1957 and later attended Valley View Baptist Church. Homer grew up during hard times on a farm in Campbell County, beginning a lifetime of frugality, honesty, and hard work. Evicted by TVA to build Norris Dam, his family moved to Hawkins County, where Homer entered the Army to serve honorably in WW II. Homer served with the 1005th Signal Company in the European Theater Operations from January 1942 to August 1945. He earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with 8 bronze stars, the Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Meritorious Service Plaque. The sacrifices of the Greatest Generation should never be forgotten. Homer was a truck driver most of his life, hauling produce to east Tennessee long before there were interstate highways. Disabled by a fall while working for the City of Knoxville, Homer eventually returned to work and stayed active in his garden until 2008. He became an active knife collector and trader, at one time having over 2000 collector knives. Homer was preceded in death by his parents David John and Mary Catherine Wood; brothers, Elmer, Esco, Fate, Albert, Harley, Carson, Dennis, Melvin, and sister, Liza; and by close friends James Medley, David Maples, Homer Garren, John Debusk, and Old Man Fowler. He leaves a brother Henry and his wife Mary, his beloved wife Peggy; four sons: Tommy, Jimmy (wife Robin), Johnny (wife Karen), and Roy; three grandchildren: Daniel (wife Jennifer), Zachary, and Sarah; great grandchildren Brenlee, Isaac, and Lucy; and pets Tiger and White Top. Special thanks to Dr. Phelps and his staff for the wonderful care they gave. The family will receive friends Wed, June 8 from 5 - 7 pm with the funeral service to follow at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Brother Marvin Carter and Elder Daniel Wood officiating. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood Cemetery for the graveside service Thurs, June 9 at 11 am. Arrangements by Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 2300 W. Adair Dr. Condolences may be offered at www.lynnhurstchapel.com
