Joan Hurst Obituary

Joan Spencer Hurst

Oak Ridge, TN

Jean Spencer Hurst, 96 of Oak Ridge, passed away on January 11, 2018 at Canterfield of Oak Ridge. Jean was raised in Brookhaven, Mississippi by her late parents John and Carrie Decelle Spencer. Jean graduated from Central High School, in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1939; attended Belhaven College, also in Jackson, for two years; and then worked at a bank in Jackson. While in high school, Jean met her future husband, Fred James Hurst. In 1942 they got married and in 1944 they moved to Oak Ridge. Jean worked at Hamilton Bank for many years and was involved in many civic and volunteer activities in Oak Ridge. Jean and Fred were active tennis players throughout their lives and longtime members of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. In addition to her love of tennis, Jean loved animals, especially her cats. Jean was honored to be a board member of EWHA Womans University in South Korea. EWHA is the world's largest female educational institute and one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. Jean is survived by her beloved husband Fred of over 75 years. He wishes to thank all of Jean's friends for the care and kindness shown her throughout her life. The last several years help, visits, calls, and cards from Ned and Diane Flack, Martha Alice and Lynn Boatner, Jo and Bob Schilling, Dr. Jim Henry, Yvonne Hitchcock, Judi Martini, and many other friends have meant so much to her. Also, special thanks to the staff at Canterfield of Oak Ridge. A celebration of Jean's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
