Joe Sabo Obituary

SABO, JOE C. - of Knoxville. Born December 30, 1947, Joe passed away at his home on Thursday, July 9, 2009. Joe and Janice came from Castlewood, Virginia to Knoxville as newlyweds to continue his education at the University of Tennessee. Joe was a businessman as well as an educator. He and his wife owned and operated Cobweb Corner Hallmark for 30 years while he taught school for Knox City and Knox County. Joe retired after 36 years of teaching social studies and coaching track to middle school kids at Rule, Whittle Springs, Christenberry, South Middle, and Gresham. He spent his time working in the retail business and in his yard at home. He produced a nice vegetable garden each year and was always so proud of his tomatoes. His flower gardens are breathtaking. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Irene Sabo. Joe is survived by his wife, Janice of 41 years; and his 3 daughters, Jennifer Greene of Baton Rouge, LA, Joy Sabo of Denver, CO, and Jessica Sabo of Murfreesboro, TN; son-in-law, Todd Greene; and 3 granddaughters, Morgan, Regan, and Camryn Greene. Joe also leaves behind 3 brothers, John Sabo of Marion, VA, Mike Sabo of Castlewood VA, and Tim Sabo of Wise, VA, and several nieces and nephews. His beloved dog, Brownie, mourns his absence and will miss his time spent with Joe while working outside. Joe will be laid to rest with graveside services Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Hill Cemetery in Castlewood, VA. The family will receive friends at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood at N. Broadway, Knoxville, Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Sabo's guest book is available at www.stevensmortuaryinc.com.

Dear Janice, Jennifer, Joy, Jessica & family,

Our hearts were so saddened to hear of Joe's sudden departure from you precious ones he loves so much. Joe always had a smile on his face and a jovial comment of some sort to add to the conversation even though it was often a quiet one. We remember the hours spent in fellowship with you in laughter and tears as our children have grown and God has so richly blessed us all abundantly more than we could ever think or ask. I think we met 30 yrs ago at Trinity UMC. God is so good to us to give us friends like you and Joe when we didn't know anyone in Knoxville.

I know Joe is rejoicing with Jesus and I pray that you will each find peace and joy in knowing that.

We remember you in love and friendship and are praying for you as you celebrate your Dad & husband's life. Separation is not easy, but it will not be forever! Heaven is a wonderful place and hopefully we will all be together there one day soon.

Love and many blessings to each of you,

Lisa & Stephen Smith

I am very saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Sabo. He was my teacher at Whittles, then had the pleasure of seeing him again at Gresham Middle School when I was a Sub there. Mr. Sabo was a very kind man and will always be remembered by his thoughtfulness.
My thoughts and prayers are with all the family at this time.

July 13, 2009

Mr. Sabo was my 7th grade homeroom and social studies teacher at Gresham Middle School in 1994 and remains one of my favorite teachers to this day. He was a blessing to me that year because I had just transited from private to public school and it was a scary time in my life. Mr. Sabo made the transition easier for me because I knew I could run to him for help or guidance and he would be there any way he could. I will forever be grateful to him and express my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Fourteen years later I can still picture walking into his classroom before school as he sat behind his desk reading the morning paper.
