Opal L. Turner

Knoxville, TN

Opal Louise Laugherty Turner, age 97, born August 20, 1921 in Knoxville, TN, died on August 24, 2018 at Shannondale Healthcare in Knoxville.

Preceded in death by her husband Theodore R. Turner, father and mother Thomas Roy Laugherty and Pearl Wells Laugherty, step-mother Nancy Tillery Laugherty, sisters Anna Mae Davis and Betty Reed, brother Carl Laugherty, and infant daughter Gearldine Faye Turner.

Survived by children Joyce Turner Roberts (John Ed) of West Palm Beach, FL, David L. Turner, Sr. (Shawna) of Knoxville, and Carole Turner Johnston (Terry) of Sergeant Bluff, IA. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, special nephew Jay R. She was a long time member and kindergarten teacher at Broadway Baptist Church of Knoxville before leaving to become a charter member of Second Baptist Church, also in Knoxville where she continued her children's ministry.

A lady of grace and patience, a 12-year breast cancer survivor, a wonderful mother, a fabulous cook, a faithful friend, and a seemingly all-knowing source of doing what was right, she will be sadly missed but joyfully remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, August 28, at Highland Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Larry Woods officiating. The family request that in lieu of flowers that donations in her memory be made Shriner's Children Hospitals at Shriners International Headquarters. 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607, telephone 844-739-0849.
