Patrick Dennis Heenan, age 80, of Lenoir City, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 1, 1938. Patrick is preceded in death by parents, Jack and Ethel Heenan and brother in law, Walter Bernard. He leaves his wife who he was united in marriage on December 23, 2006, Sharron Heenan of Lenoir City; children, Kevin Heenan and wife, Laura of Deleware, Tracey Heenan of Burlington, Vermont, Colleen and husband, Ed Cain, of Bedford, Massachusetts, and Patrick Heenan and wife, Terri of Colleyville, Texas; seven grandchildren; three sisters and one brother, Sally Bernard, Mike and Brenda Heenan, BettyAnn and Pat Callanan and Katy and Dr. Mike McKenzie all of Michigan; many nephews, nieces and cousins scattered over several states.
Patrick attended school at Visitation Grade School, University of Detroit High School and graduated from his father's alma mater, the University of Notre Dame in 1960 with a Business Administration Degree. Sixteen of his fellow classmates from high school enrolled with him and all seventeen graduated from Notre Dame.
Patrick played varsity football for one year each in grade school, high school and college. Earning a football scholarship his senior year. At Notre Dame he played interhall football for the first three years, with his team winning each year and his senior year for the varsity. Patrick attended Culver Summer Camp in Plymouth Indiana during his 6th through 11th grades in school, Woodcraft Beavers the first three years and the Naval Military School the last three years, making him eligible for the Naval Academy.
Patrick played football for the Washington Redskins, 1960 and 1961. He broke his clavicle his second year thus ending his professional career. Patrick became an IAABO Basketball Official 1962-1976, Southern Conference Basketball referee 1968-1976, CYO Jr. High, ACC 1973-1974 and coached football for Georgetown PR Maryland Junior Varsity 1963-1965. Patrick was the Washington Redskins Alumni President in 1985 in Washington, DC and was inducted into the Southern Slow Pitch Hall of Fame in 1980. Patrick was an all around athlete. He bowled as a child and both his parents were bowlers. His mother was awarded the Hall of Fame for bowling in Michigan in the 1960's. He loved to play golf and played with his many friends over many years.
Patrick spent thirty five years in the optical business as an outside sales person, Bausch and Lomb, Washington, DC twenty years and Homer Optical in Silver Spring, Maryland fifteen years, retiring in 1997. He served in the National Guard active duty in Fort Jackson, South Carolina with an Honorable Discharge. Patrick was an active member of the Father John Savoca Council #12633 Knights of Columbus serving the parish of St, Thomas the Apostle Church in Lenoir City, Tennessee.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1580 St. Thomas Way, Lenoir City, on Monday, April 30, 2018, with visitation from 10:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. followed by the Mass at 11:00a.m. The family will welcome friends at a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall following the Mass. Burial will be held later at Shiloh Cemetery in Kaloma, Iowa. Having a servant's heart, Patrick donated his brain to the Brain Injury Research Institute and Fitzsimmons Law Firm for research.
