Raleigh Wynn Sr. obituary, 1924-2017, Knoxville, TN

Raleigh Wynn Obituary

Raleigh Wynn, Sr. departed this life on April 30, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. He was born the fourth child to the late Alexander, Sr. and Essie (Bullard) Wynn on February 13, 1924. “Big Wynn” or “Coach” as many fondly referred to him, led a long life of service to others. As a mentor and friend to many of Knoxville’s youth, he taught that excellence in education and sports combined was a path to a successful life, many of whom accomplished just that! Big Wynn led by example; and his work in the community became a testimony. His dedication to education and sports began as a student at Austin High School where he played football. He graduated AHS in 1942 and later entered Clark College (Atlanta, GA), again playing football before being drafted into the service in 1943. Wynn, Sr. served with the 555th Battalion Combat Q.M. Corp subsequently became wounded and received a purple heart. While in the service, he played football with the E.T.O. All Stars, named to the All Service Team in 1945. Wynn, Sr. was one of five Black players to play in the all-star game in Paris, France in January 1946 where he was named “Outstanding Lineman.” Continuing his love of education and sports, he attended Tennessee State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. He was the captain of the football team (1948-1949) and one of the most versatile linemen to ever play at TSU. Wynn, Sr. played in the Canadian League in 1950 as well. His education spanned from Tennessee to New York, graduating from University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Master’s degree and furthering his studies at New York University of Physical Education. Raleigh Wynn, Sr. was a distinguished man. He became an educator and coach showing youth there’s always a better path if you believe in yourself. Big Wynn coached at Knoxville College, East High School and Austin East High School where he served as Head Coach and Athletic Director. While at Austin East he was an Assistant Principal. Coach left Austin East and became Principal of Park Junior High School, as an administrator, he continued to serve in positions as Building Administrator at Knoxville Adult Center and later Principal at Van Gilder Occupational Center from where he retired. Wynn, Sr. served as a Knoxville City Councilman. He had numerous affiliations with prominent organizations and holding positions in many of them. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, James E. Derrick Elks Lodge 1667, former board of directors’ member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Commander, VFW Post 6019, the Sports Trail Century Club, National Football Hall of Fame Alumni to name a few. Along with the many roles he had, Wynn, Sr. was a Deacon at Mount Zion Baptist Church. He served as president of the Men’s Brotherhood at the church where to a basketball court “WYNN’S COURT” was erected in his honor. Raleigh, Sr. was preceded in death by wife, Edna Benn- Wynn; son, Michael Jerome; brothers, Eddie, William “Whitt”, Robert “RL” and Alexander Jr. “June” Wynn; sisters, Sarah Wynn and Essie Smith; nephew, Darren Allen; and beloved cousins who were more like a brother and a sister, Jefferson Davis, Jr. and Nola Martin Atkins. He leaves to mourn his passing: son, Raleigh Wynn, Jr.; daughter, Sheri Carter; grandchildren: Cheri Archer, Trina Wynn, Stacey Williams, Tamara Wynn, Christopher Wynn, Peter Carter, Rhonda Carter, Meagen Wynn and Daryl Wynn; nine great grandchildren: two great great grandchildren; sister Mary Ruth Reed; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Wynn and Ruth Benn; and a multitude of cousins, devoted friends and colleagues. Sunday, May 7, 2017, the body will lie in state from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church at 2714 Brooks Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37914. Monday, May 8, 2017, the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with funeral to follow at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Reverend Dr. Johnnie Skinner, Sr. officiating. Entombment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa, TN where a white dove release will conclude the service. Flowers may be delivered to the church the morning of the service. To one of the greatest I have ever known. He was the reasons I chose A-E. All of my team mates were going else where to go play football but he was more of the father figures I needed as well as a role model. He also became someone I could trust. In 1975 when I graduated and attended Lincoln Memorial University I KNEW I had to become a member of the greatest fraternities Omega Psi Phi.
He made me a better man and a better person. I will never forget what he meant to my siblings and yes he knew all of us by name.
God Bless all of you.

Mr. Wynn was truly a Champion. He had a love for children and worked to help them however he could. He was active physically instead of talk about what needed to be done. May he rest in peace and ever be remembered.

To the family of our beloved Bro. Wynn Sr.

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

This was a man that really knew the value of the "village" because he didn't try to raise people's children , he sat up a village with home, school and family to help a child succeed and we haven't had a model like that since. Mr. Wynn (Coach) was truly a wonderful person to know; not only tall in stature but also in the lives he touched. He was definitely missed at Mt Zion when his illness prevented him from attending. However, I thank God I was able to visit him during his illness although not as often as I would have liked. However, we can rest assured he is still here in spirit. May we all, at some point have an opportunity to touch just one life as he has so very many. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

When I am dead, my dearest

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it's the memories of you that are the most precious.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Tribute to Coach Raleigh Wynn Sr.
Coach Wynn was the greatest coach, teacher, and friend that I have ever known. From Maynard, Bearsley, Austin-East and Knoxville College, I played ball for Coach Wynn. Coach Wynn has always been there for me. He was there for me when my parents passed. He was there for me when I was sick and hospitalized. He was there for me when I was in prison. He was there for me when I pastored a church in Cleveland, Ohio. I pray that every young person would an opportunity to have a person like Coach Raleigh Wynn in their lives. This world would be a better place to live. My prayers and condolences go to the Wynn Family as they mourn the loss of a legend. Rev. To Raleigh and the family. "Big Wynn" had been in my life since 1964 while at Maynard until I graduated from A-E in 1972. The life lessons I learned from him during our suspension from the TSSAA were been very important in my development into my military career that ended in 1998 after 26 years. Many times, during those years I would revert to his teachings. He has turn many young men into "Men" by his shining example. REST IN PEACE "COACH". You have fought the good fight.

To the Wynn family

My family thoughts and prayers are with you doing this time of sorrow. Mr. Wynn was my principal at Park Jr. and he was also a man I could talk to about anything. I would watch his interactions with people not only at school but also at Mt. Zion Church. He was a character witness for when I got in trouble in my youth and that day changed my path forever. I am truly grateful and don't know what my life would be like if not for his faith in me.

To the family and community of Mr. Wynn, Know that prayers are going forward for all. The impact of Mr. Wynn has literally reached around the world. Not only was he a family man, he was a mentor long before "mentor" became a buzz word. We men of Omega Psi Phi will miss our friend!

Big Wynn spoke up for us when we were children. Coach remembered it all and remained faithful to us well after we had left school. Rest well Coach- You certainly deserve it.
