Veryl Clabe Atchley

Kodak - Veryl Clabe Atchley, age 89, of Kodak, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021, while surrounded by his family. He graduated from Sevier County High School and then the University of Tennessee with a master's degree in education. Prior to starting his teaching career, he served his country in the United States Army. After the Army, he started his teaching career in the Sevier County Schools. He then taught at Carter High School in Knox County for over 37 years.

He was a member of French Broad Valley Baptist Church and he served faithfully as a Deacon for over 63 years, as well as serving as a Sunday School teacher.

Veryl, known to most as "Veryl C.", was preceded in death by his parents James Clabe Atchley and Rosa Mae (Jenkins) Atchley, his wife of 66 years, Lillian Marie (Hickman) Atchley and his sister, Debbie Jane (Atchley) Hinkle.

He is survived by his daughters Sharon Kay Atchley and Verleen (Atchley) Julian; grandchildren, Shawn Julian (Amy) and Nathan Julian (Rachelle); great-grandchildren, Noah Julian, Gemma Julian, Allie Julian and Locklyn Julian; niece, Jama Hinkle; extended family members, Eugene Hinkle, Travis and Stacey Helton, and Jordan and Jasmine Helton; and fellow church members, community friends and neighbors.

He loved his church, his family, teaching, working on the farm and playing with his great-grandchildren.

Thanks to everyone for their prayers, cards, calls and most of all their friendship. Special thanks to all caregivers that assisted with his care.

The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Friday, June 18, 2021 with service to follow at 7PM at French Broad Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie Harkleroad and Rev. John Forsythe officiating. Family and friends will meet 10AM Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Underwood Cemetery for graveside service and interment. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Post 104. Sorry to here about Mr.Atchley I had three years of math at Carter High School in the early to mid 70's he was one of my favorite teachers my prayers & thoughts go out to.

I didn’t have Mr. Atchley as I student but I knew him and grew up with Sharon Kay & Verleen as classmates at Carter. He had a good sense of humor & liked to have a good laugh after school. I’m keeping Sharon Kay & all the family in my thoughts and prayers.

I remember having a math class my sophomore year,and helping him in his Hay Field a few times,he was a Good Teacher,and Friend,may the Lord bless him.
