KENDALLVILLE - Harold E. Hartman, age 96, of Kendallville, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018, at the Orchard Pointe Health Campus.
Born on Jan. 22, 1922, in Jefferson Township, Noble County, Indiana, he was the son of John O. Hartman and Gertrude E. (Trowbridge) Hartman.
Harold grew up in DeKalb County, Indiana, on a farm and attended Ashley High School through the 10th grade. In 1942 he married Ella Marie Frey and they celebrated 71 years of marriage till her death in October 2013.
His three siblings, Ralph Hartman, Bernice (Hartman) Freeman, and Walter Hartman, preceded him in death. Harold is survived by his son, Jack Hartman of Kendallville, and daughter Patsy (Hartman) Atkins of DeMotte, Indiana; four grandchildren, James Hartman, Sarah Hartman, Piper (Atkins) Stowers and Robert Atkins; along with 10 great-grandchildren.
A good portion of his life he supported his family as a farmer. He then was employed at the Kendallville Feed Mill from 1951 to 1964 and the Steckley's Feed Mill from 1964 through 1983.
He retired in 1985 and moved to Kendallville to enjoy fishing, mushroom hunting, traveling to Gulf Shores, Alabama, in the winter and telling anecdotes of his life to anyone who wanted to listen.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at the Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville at 1 p.m. with viewing from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service. The Rev. Steven Bahrt will officiate the funeral service. Burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or to Parkview Noble Hospice.
