AUBURN — Death, which brought exceptionally deep sorrow, came to the Cupka household in the early evening Saturday, April 18, 2015. For, after a protracted struggle with Alzheimer's disease, W. Roger Cupka, a faithful believer in Christ, left this world to be with the Lord. Roger passed at his home in Auburn, Indiana, while surrounded by family.
His wife Nancy Cupka; and his sons, Greg and Tom; his brother, Richard Cupka; and five grandchildren, Quentin, Grace, Allie, Michael and Emily survive him.
Roger was born in Rensselaer, Indiana, on June 7, 1936, to William Cupka and Rosa Faye Cupka, a railroad station agent/telegrapher, and a homemaker respectively. Roger's mother passed away when he was 3 years old. His father was latter married to Mabel Pingle.
Roger graduated from Medaryville High School in 1954 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Communications Specialist, stationed in Hawaii. Following his term of service, the Monon Railroad employed him as a station agent/telegrapher. He then went to work for the Indiana State Police as the Communications Chief. He retired at the Bloomington Post after 29 years of service. Following that retirement, he accepted a new position with the State Emergency Management Agency (now known as the Indiana Department of Homeland Security) as the Communications Director for the State of Indiana. He retired from this position after 15 years of service. During his working life Roger received commendations from the governor on multiple occasions. Professionally, Roger was recognized many times, although he was never one to acknowledge his own accomplishments.
Roger is a loving father and a devoted husband. He made countless sacrifices to provide for his family. Moreover, his family could always count on him to come to their rescue. Roger was type of person who would lift you up out of a bad situation, even if he had to carry you on his shoulders to do it. Prior to his bout with Alzheimer's disease Roger Cupka was an avid Ham radio operator; for several years he was also the state coordinator for the Indianapolis RACES group. His amateur radio call sign was K9BBZ. For all the hams out there, on behalf of Roger Cupka, "_… _._. _. .._ 73's - K9BBZ Clear."
His father, William Cupka; mother, Fay Cupka; stepmother, Mabel Cupka; and a sister who died in infancy, preceded Roger in death.
