Verda Jeannine Sherard, 84, of Hurley, SD died on Sept. 20, 2025 after a brief stay at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. She left surrounded by family and was greeted by her Lord and Savior and family members who went before her. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Monday, September 29, 2025 at Spring Valley Lutheran Church, Viborg. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, September 28, at the church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.
Verda Jeannine Klinghagen was born to Mike and Tillie Klinghagen of Lennox, SD on April 7, 1941. She joined her sisters DeLilia and Marlene. She graduated from Lennox High School in 1959.
She married Darrell Sherard Aug. 9, 1959. They began their story on a farm five miles west of their current residence, which they moved to in 1972. They both lived on the farm until the time of their passing. To this union, three children were born – Randall, Robb and Raye.
Verda made her life as a homemaker and a farm wife, assisting Darrell in running the day-to-day operations of the farm and the Spring Valley Dairy. They enjoyed travelling and attending car shows.
Verda was devoted to her Lord and Savior. She was an active member of the Spring Valley Lutheran Church, participating in many programs including the Circle group and the Women’s Group (formerly WELCA). In the Women’s Group, she served in various leadership roles for many years.
She loved spending time with her family, especially on holidays when everyone would gather at her house. She enjoyed shopping, even taking her grandchildren on shopping sprees for their birthdays. She loved looking for new clothes and jewelry which she would wear to church and to visit with friends and family. She loved to sew and garden and was often seen watering her flowers around the house.
Verda is survived by her children, Randall (Gina) Sherard of Turlock, CA and Robb (Danielle) Sherard and Raye (Joddie) Sherard, both of Hurley; a sister, Marlene Hofer of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Beth (Bobby) Hutcheson of Jefferson, SD, Aaron (Haylee) Sherard of Hurley, Ivy (Anthony) Jacobs of Sioux Falls, SD, Kinsey (Alex) Taggart of Gayville, SD and Cayman Sherard of Hurley; eight great-grandchildren, Loretta and Clara Sherard, Jessica and Daniel Jacobs, Ace and Adeline Taggart, Felicity Fennel and Breanna Hutcheson (fiance Kolby Bocian); and a great-great-granddaughter, Harper Bocian; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darrell; sisters, Della Klinghagen and DeLilia Peterson; a great-granddaughter, Hazel Sherard.
