Eugene was born at home on July 3, 1935, in rural Rockford, Iowa, to Julius and Elma (Ernst) Meier. He attended Rockford schools and graduated from Rockford High School in 1953. From a young age, Eugene was deeply involved in farming-a passion that would remain with him throughout his life. His favorite season was spring, when he loved to witness what he fondly called "the reproduction of nature:"
During his high school years, Eugene was a proud member of the Rockford football team. He lived for the season and often reminisced about those days. His team won the conference championship two or three times during his four years, and as the team's kicker, he made quite an impression-once kicking the ball out of the end zone four times in his final game. With limited players, everyone played the full 60 minutes, and Eugene cherished the camaraderie and hard work that defined those days.
Eugene's work ethic carried into his adult life. His first job was at Armour Meat Packing in Mason City, followed by positions at Oliver Corporation in Charles City and Fairbanks-Morse in Beloit, Wisconsin, where he helped build diesel engines for locomotives. He later worked at Deckers in Mason City. No matter the job, Eugene lived by the advice passed down from his parents: From his mother - "Always be yourself." From his father - "Do everything the very best you know how."
On September 15, 1957, Eugene married the love of his life, Lucille Evelyn Kielsmeier. In his own words, written on August 22 years ago, he called her "my wife my favorite doll." Together they shared 68 wonderful years of marriage, building a family and a life grounded in love, faith, and hard work.
Eugene is survived by his beloved wife, Lucille; their children, Lyndon (Rockford), Janette (Rockford), and Starla (Iowa Falls); and many friends and loved ones who will remember his warmth, wisdom, and quiet strength.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend, a man who loved the land, valued integrity, and found joy in life's simple moments.
