Verlene Horbach Obituary
Verlene Ann Horbach, 89, of Toledo, passed away Friday, October 17, 2025 at UnityPoint-Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 23, 2025 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, with Father Michael McAndrew as the officiant. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church with a Vigil Service following visitation at 7:00 PM.
Verlene was born on September 3, 1936, on the family farm in rural Dike, Iowa, the daughter of Bruno and Vera (Radeff) Bronsema.
Verlene was proud of her farm-girl heritage, she also enjoyed activities such as softball, six-player girls basketball, playing her guitar and singing on the radio.
She graduated from Parkersburg High School, and Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Verlene married Ron Horbach, and together they had six children.
Verlene was an elementary teacher, stay at home mom, and for over twenty years she was the local State Farm Insurance agent in Toledo. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.
Survivors include her children, Lance (Jody) Horbach of Montezuma, Lori (Gary) Sirman of Tyler, TX, Lon (Janet) Horbach of Ellston, Larry (Christine) Horbach of Toledo, Lee (Cindy) Horbach of Jefferson, IA; son-in-law, Rex Loewen of Lawrence, KS; grandchildren, Amy (John) Huff, Kendra (Brice) Pitman, Missy (Dave) Moorman, Nick (Courtney) Horbach, Ryan Sirman, Devyn (Tyler) Krug, Hunter (Jessica) Horbach, Abby Horbach, Brandon (Jamie) Horbach, Tyler (Katelyn) Horbach, Kaitlin (Garrett) Nelson, Joshua Horbach, Alia (Aaron) Loewen-Friedley, Ayla Loewen, Lyle (Emma) Loewen, and Molly Loewen; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Janelle Fleming of Marion; her niece, Teri; and nephew, B.J.
Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Lisa Loewen; brother-in-law, Bill Fleming; brother, Denny; and sister Kemlyn Bronsema.
A memorial fund will be established.
