Luann Doughty Obituary
Luann Marie Doughty died peacefully at home on October 7, 2025 at the age of 95.
Born Luann Marie Miller September 10, 1930 in Kellogg, Idaho to parents Katherine Luann Mason Miller and Cleanor Xenophon "Charles" R. Miller. She later moved to Spokane where she graduated from North Central High School in 1947 at age 16. Luann married George William Doughty, Jr. in 1948 and moved to the Seattle area, where they both worked for Boeing. Luann worked in the Engineering Department, where she became certified in Blueprint Reading and received a 5year service award in 1955.
They returned to George's birthplace in the 4-Mound area in 1956 to farm and raise their family. Luann became a full partner in the farm work from fieldwork to cattle handling and from haying and harvesting to bookkeeping.
Luann was a founding member of the Four Mound Homemakers Club, which became her favorite respite from the demands of farm life. She was an accomplished quilter, seamstress, artist and skilled craftsperson, sewing and crafting dolls, toys, ceramics and numerous handmade items for friends, family and the community for pocket money, mostly to buy more materials. She generously shared her talents, teaching and encouraging many other local rural women how to make hand-crafted items and hosting quilting parties in her home. Over the years, to make ends meet, she had diverse hobbies, including vegetable gardening, canning & preserving the garden produce, raising pigs, chickens & turkeys, cutting & hauling firewood and baking & decorating professional-quality cakes. She bottled her own homemade root beer, made peanut brittle and baked legendary cinnamon rolls and pies. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading books and magazines and playing board games.
After Luann was widowed in 1992, she retired from farming, but not farm life. When not at the new home she helped build, she enjoyed traveling with her children to places such as Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Florida, Mexico and the Philippines. She also enjoyed frequent motorhome trips in the Northwest with companion and family friend Dan Schlangen.
Luann was a hard worker with a gentle, generous spirit. She was active into her 80's until dementia gradually robbed her of most activities. Luann was able to remain living in her home thanks to her devoted son, John, who retuned to live with her along with his wife Glocil and sons. They became her primary caregivers throughout her declining years.
Luann was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Doughty, Jr., 2 brothers, Jerry Miller and Clyde Miller, and sister Carol Louise Beckerleg. Luann is survived by her brother, Charles "Chuck" Miller, her 4 children, Linda McGee, Suzi Posa, Laura Doughty and John Doughty, and by 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.
