Carol Weiland Obituary

Carol Ann Weiland

January 13, 1934 - September 29, 2025

Carol Ann Weiland, age 91, of Onalaska, Wis., passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Carol was born at home in La Crosse, Wis., on January 13, 1934, to Herman and Rena (Bonnie) Poellinger. She married John Weiland, son of John and Minnie (Strasser) Weiland, on October 3, 1953, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in La Crosse. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to Onalaska, where John built their home from the basement up-a labor of love that grew alongside their family.

Carol graduated from Holy Trinity Grade School and Aquinas High School, Class of 1952. As a teenager she worked picking strawberries and as a root beer stand carhop-where she first met John. Over the years, she worked at the La Crosse Garment Factory, Oak Forest Nursing Home, and with the Onalaska School District.

For more than five decades, Carol was the heart of every holiday gathering, hosting celebrations filled with warmth, laughter, strawberries and apple slices. Her family fondly remembers teasing her about her love of TV shopping, a hobby she enjoyed well into her later years. Carol also took pleasure in caring for her yard and abundant flowers.

In retirement, Carol and John traveled extensively and spent winters in Florida, Texas, and Arizona. Their marriage spanned 63 years until John's passing in 2016.

Carol remained active in her community, attending water exercise classes, chair yoga, and walking the track at the Y. She also enjoyed Bingo and lunch at the Onalaska Community Center. In more recent years, she shared many joyful afternoons with her cherished friend Jim Sill-listening to music, working on puzzles, and sharing Sunday meals (often pizza). Jim brought great happiness to Carol's life.

Carol is survived by her children, Tim Weiland, Cindy Mettille, and Terry (Karla) Weiland; her sister, Pat Kirchner (Vern Kruk); grandchildren, Jen (Brian) Pinnow, Andy (Katie) Mettille, Erik (Julie) Mettille, Melissa (Adam) Aspenson, and Danielle Weiland; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Onalaska. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse. Family and friends may gather at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Online condolences can be given at www.schumacher-kish.com.
