David A. Solie
ONALASKA - In the presence of his family, David A. Solie, of Onalaska, passed peacefully into heaven on Friday, September 2, 2022. He was 95.
Dave grew up in La Crosse, the youngest of the three children of Theodore and Teresa (Nedvidek) Solie. He attended La Crosse Central High School, where he excelled at football and tennis, and was a member of the 1944-45 All-City basketball team. Before high school graduation, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the Seabees at Pearl Harbor at the end of World War II. Following his service, he earned his college degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In 1958, Dave married Joan Hansen at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Dave and Joan were two of the charter members of the church and Dave continued his membership there until his death.
Dave was employed for many years by General Adjustment Bureau (GAB) as branch manager at the office in the Hoeschler Exchange Building in downtown La Crosse. After his retirement from the company in 1989, Dave started his own small business, using the initials from his name to establish Diversified Advisory Services (D.A.S.). He also worked as a volunteer bailiff at the La Crosse County Courthouse.
Dave was an avid gardener, tennis player and lover of Big Band, jazz and classical music. He was curious and outgoing and possessed the unique ability to be simultaneously realistic and optimistic. He just loved people and especially loved working with children as a grandparent volunteer at Eagle Bluff Elementary School. Everything he did was for his family.
He is survived by his children: David Jr. (Janice) and Sarah (Tim Hemesath); grandchildren: Kelly McMahon (Matt), David III (Alexis), Katie Solie and Grace Hemesath; great-grandchildren: Elanora and Elizabeth McMahon; nieces: Catherine Roberts, Virginia Emmons and Laurie Carlson; and nephews: Theodore ("Dan") Solie, and Steve and Bruce Bruchman. Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; a daughter, Susan Solie; his parents; a brother, Ted Solie; and his wife, Catherine; and a sister, Doris; and her husband, Roy Bruchman.
The Solie family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff members of Eagle Crest North, Riverside Transitional Care in La Crosse, Brookdale Senior Living in Onalaska and Gundersen Health System for the excellent and compassionate care Dave received in recent years.
A drop-in reception will be held in his honor on Saturday, October 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 4141 Mormon Coulee Road in La Crosse. Pastor Harald Bringsjord will deliver a message at 11:30 a.m., followed by a time of sharing by family and friends. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting the family. An online guest book is available at www.schumacher-kish.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family will distribute any gifts received to the causes Dave supported.

my father john fleis loved playing tennis as much as dave did, and they had a lot of good times.. He was a great
neighbor , as we had employees and friends who lived next door for many yrs and dave would always lend a hand. One of his best attributes, was he has great kids . In the end , it comes down to what you leave behind,
and dave certainly did a great job of that. Good by to good friend. RIP dave. steve fleis

I have very fond memories of time spent with my uncle "DAY DOE". That's what I called him starting back when I was a toddler. My first memories are when he came to Monona, WI for a visit. I was maybe 4 years old & "Dado" made a mini golf course by sinking tin cans into the backyard. I & my family visited Daves parents, Gramps & Gram Solie, numerous times & saw Dave on most of those many trips from White Bear Lake, MN in my dad's station wagon. I still have Dave's Wright & Ditson Davis Cup tennis racket that he gave me back in the 80's.
I had a 5-day trip reserved to fly up for the celebration of life gathering from my home in Naples, Fl. Unfortunately, I had to cancel all the reservations due to Hurricane Ian. However, I will be there in spirit while reminiscing the good times spent with Uncle David A. Solie, Jr.

What can we say about an outstanding human being like Mr. Solie? I think the best way to describe him, is to say he was a class act. When I sold his home for him back in 2017 he was such a genuine and kind person to work with. I have the utmost respect for him. My sympathy to all his family and friends.

Where does one begin with a man like Dave Solie Sr.???
I had the honor of knowing him first when he sat on the Onalaska Education Foundation Board as Grant Chairman and sent me a letter explaining that my grant request to build a "Rising to the Top" Sculpture with my Onalaska High School Art Students was awarded and applauded. His eloquent words stay with me today. Every time I drive by the Sculpture I think of him! HE had the ability to make people "Rise to the Top"!!!
I have also had the pleasure of teaching Art to three of his grandchildren, Kelly, David, and Katie. All following in their grandfather's humongous footsteps.
His son Dave and daughter in law Janice,
helped me haul a floor loom out of a donor's house and reassemble it in Eagle Bluff's Art Room. Who gives up days of their precious free time but the Solie's!
Dave led by example as shown by his family. What a LEGACY Dave has left in his kindness and the kindness he has instilled in his family carrying out that LEGACY.
EVERYONE in Solie family, even in their sadness, can rejoice in their Father, Grandfather, and great grandfather's life well lived!
My deepest sympathy and prayers are with All of you.

Sarah, Dave and families....
Susan is so right when she says that she has decades worth of memories that make her smile. Our whole family does. Our two families had such a beautiful, and fun, relationship for so many, many years! Family trips up north together, great Christmas parties, your Dad's and my gag gifts (uffda), New Year's Eve early dinners at Edwardo's and then desserts at one of our homes, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. Wonderful, wonderful memories!! All of you have my most sincere, and deepest, sympathy!! Love and hugs to all of you!

Dave, Sarah, and family:
I am so saddened to read of your sweet dad´s passing. He and your mom were two of my favorite people on the planet. Those of us in the drama world at WSHS just referred to them as "mom and dad." Your dad was a tireless cheerleader when we took one-act plays to competition. I feel they, along with my own parents and some other key mentors, helped shape the person I strive to be today.
I have thought of your dad often since your mom´s passing and wondered how he was doing. I believe they are united again.
May God give you peace with beautiful memories of them, and may the knowledge others loved them and mourn with you give you comfort as well.
God Bless,
Dale Pasell

I have decades worth of memories that make me smile. Mr. Solie holding up signs he made for me at concerts or pep band performances, being my impromptu prom "date", vacations up north, and him leaping through the parking lot to pick me and Sarah up wearing leopard print shorts and long black dress socks. The Solies have been a second family to me, and for that I am grateful. All my love to Sarah and Dave and their families. Susan
