Edith Nutter Obituary

Edith Fels Nutter

January 6, 1930 - November 19, 2024

Edith Fels Nutter, 94, of La Crosse, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. Edith was born on January 6, 1930 in Karlsruhe, Germany to Karl and Frieda (Zimmermann) Fels. She was the youngest of five children and lived in her hometown during WWII. Her family survived bombings and occupation, but lost their home on September 4, 1944 to Anglo American air raids.

From 1947-1956 she worked for the German government as an overseas telephone operator. Edie married Larry Nutter on April 28, 1956 in Karlsruhe, Germany. She came to America in July of 1956 and proudly became a US citizen in May of 1960. Edie worked at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital for more than 30 years, retiring from the hospital laboratory in 1996. Edie loved the opera, playing bridge, golf and traveling. Her hobbies were knitting and crossword puzzles.

Edie is survived by nieces and nephews, many friends and former colleagues. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Larry, on November 5, 2003; her parents, three sisters, and a brother also preceded her in death back in Germany.

Edie's love, her laughter and her smile will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a kind and sharing person. Children and education were her passion and is evidenced by her support of Gundersen Health System and UW-La Crosse chemistry students.

A gathering for family and friends will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral & Cremation Services of La Crosse, followed by a service at 3 p.m. A private burial will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Edith Nutter Fund to benefit the Children's Miracle Network through the Gundersen Medical Foundation or the Family & Children's Center.

I had the absolute pleasure of taking care of Edith when I worked as a Resident Care Associate at Bethany On Cass St Assisted Living from 2021-2023. I loved hearing all about Edith's stories about her home back in Germany and she showed me many pictures in her photo albums of herself, her family and her friends. She even told me that when she worked at Gundersen Health System she was the one who took the picture of the Lilly Pad Flower (In Germany) that hangs up in the halla of Gundersen Health System. Edith and I became good friends/acquaintances over the years when I worked at BOC. Edith had so much spunk, had a good sense of humor and had a zest for life. Edith was so kind hearted. I am beyond blessed to have met someone like Edith, because I got to learn so much about Germany and got to know so much about her life. Edith told me at one time that she also gave scholarships (UWL and Gundersen). Edith also told me her time at Gundersen when she worked as a Lab Technician and she loved her job. I will forever be grateful to have met an amazing woman like Edith Nutter. Condolences to the Family and Friends of Ms. Edie'.

Mrs. Nutter -- What an interesting and courageous life she lived. I knew her as an instructor in my Chem-102 lab in the summer of 1967. She recognized me as one who was having some difficulty, and paired me up with another student with similar problems. She got both of us through the class with B grades. I've always been thankful for her help. May she rest in peace.
