Gertrude A. "Gert" Zimmerman
LA CROSSE - Gertrude A. "Gert" Zimmerman, age 100 years, 4 months and 10 days, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 17, 2021.
She was born July 7, 1921 in Trempealeau, WI to Alfred and Gertrude (Mulder) Ryder. Gertrude lived her entire life in Trempealeau. She graduated from Healy Memorial High School in Trempealeau in 1940. On October 11, 1941 she was united in marriage to Donald R. Zimmerman of La Moille, MN.
Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church in Trempealeau and joined the Cradle Roll at 5 months old.
Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Women for many years, a member of the V.F.W. Post 1915 Ladies Auxiliary, the Heritage Society and the Stitch and Study Group. Gertrude loved to gather with friends for coffee. She enjoyed watching sports, especially the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers. She loved traveling with the RV and later years with bus tours, gardening and gathering with family and friends, especially during Catfish Days! Gertrude was known as the "go to" person if anyone needed information about the history of Trempealeau.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Kaye (Stan) Brueggen of Onalaska; her son, John (Jackie) Zimmerman of Holmen; five grandchildren: Mike (Renee) Brueggen, Ann Staats, Lynn Brueggen, Robert Zimmerman, Angie Zimmerman; two step-grandchildren: Jordan and Jeremy Kalb; blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Cody (Raquel) Zimmerman, Connor Zimmerman, Carleigh Zimmerman, Robert Rainy, Michaela Brueggen, Samantha Staats, Austin Every, Lynzie Every, Abby Vick; nieces, nephews and a brother, Calvin Ryder of Great Falls, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Gertrude Ryder; husband, Donald R. Zimmerman; a son, Donald L. "Donnie" Zimmerman; sisters: Cora (Dutch) Reed, Hazel (Ed) Fitzpatrick; a brother, Edward "Eddie" Ryder and sisters-in-law, Marjorie Ryder and Irene Ryder.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 22, 2021 at the United Methodist Church in Trempealeau from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. with a Christian service at 2:00 P.M. Burial will be at Green Mound Cemetery in Holmen following the service. Lunch will be held at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall following the burial.
