Larry Nottestad Obituary

Larry Nottestad

October 31, 1952 - September 20, 2025

WESTBY - Larry Nottestad, age 72, of Westby died peacefully on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at his home. Larry was born on October 31, 1952 to Alton and Helen (Onshus) Nottestad. He became a child of God November 23, 1952, and later reaffirmed his faith in l967. He was a lifelong member of North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and served many years on the church's cemetery association. Larry started his school years at the rural one-room Homstad School in Newry and was a member of the Westby High School class of 1970. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course in 1973.

Larry then returned to the family dairy farm where he worked along side his father, and in later years helping his nephew, Daniel, with his beef cattle. Larry and his father did custom silo filling of hay and corn for area farmers for many years. He followed the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badger sports teams. Evenings would find him sitting at the kitchen table reading the daily and weekly newspapers along with numerous farming magazines. He never had an I Phone or computer. But he thoroughly enjoyed talking with people-all people whom he encountered in his life. He was a historian and enjoyed talking with neighbors and relatives about the "old days". Many of his stories were recounted from his father's recollections. His material needs were simple, but his prized possession was his 1990 F250 Ford truck, bought new, and only has 20,000 miles on it currently.

Larry had health challenges which included epilepsy for most of his life. He enjoyed car rides with Daniel to look at machinery, checking hay quality at hay auctions, assessing farmer's crops in their fields and pondering the viability of farming in this country. He enjoyed food, and maybe too much but each year on his birthday, Aunt Aneda Mae would come driving down the driveway to deliver fresh lefse and flatbread. Larry was so proud of Daniel carrying on the family farm and helping him as he was able. Larry will be remembered for his kindness and common sense.

Larry is survived by his sister Linda (Brian) Thies; nephew Daniel (Alanna) Thies; niece Johanna (David) Jessee; special great-niece and nephew Charlotte and Jacob Thies; cousins Dorothy Anderson Dahlen, Sherman Nottestad and Susan Onshus; and family friend Valborg Kvigne. He was preceded in death by his parents; aunts and uncles Lloyd (Alice) Nottestad, Ethel (Lyder) Anderson and Orland (Aneda Mae) Onshus; cousins Ardys Bakkestuen, Lyle Nottestad, Michael Onshus, Monte Onshus; and special friends Dennis Hagen and Bob Dahlen.

Larry had a true love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Matthew 11:28 "Come unto me all who are weary and I will give you rest." In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the North Coon Prairie Church with a luncheon to follow. Pastor Pat Ziems officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Friends called at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
