Nancy Haggerty Obituary

Nancy Poehling Haggerty

Nancy Poehling Haggerty passed to eternal life on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Mayo St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. She had Tim, Maureen, and Mollie by her side at the end, along with the spirit of a multitude of family and friends. Those who knew Nancy know how kind and compassionate she was. Other people's needs were always Nancy's first thoughts.

She was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin to parents Anne (Schwartz) and Gerhard G. Poehling. She graduated from Aquinas High School in 1964. She went on to graduate from Marquette University and Viterbo University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and furthered her education with a Master's in Public Health from UW-La Crosse. She married the love of her life, Tim Haggerty on April 29, 1967.

Nancy battled health issues her entire life after having Rheumatic Fever as a child which damaged her heart valves. She had the first of three open heart surgeries in 1985 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin performed by Dr. Eric Gundersen. Nancy was never afraid to face these surgeries because of her zest for life. She had a relentless spirit and never let her medical needs hold her back in any way.

Nancy is survived by her husband of nearly 58 years, Tim, and two daughters, Maureen (Marty) Pandola, Mollie (Craig) Johnson; four grandchildren, Martin (Nicole Magerko) Pandola, Amanda (Robert San Soucie) Pandola, Reilly Johnson, Sophia Johnson; sister, Mary (David) Prahler; and brothers, Dr. Gary Poehling, Robert (Patrick) Poehling, James (Karen) Poehling, John (Dixie) Poehling, Joseph (Kate) Poehling, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gerhard (Gary) and Anne Poehling; sister, Catherine (Edward) Felten; and sister-in-law, Sandra Kidd Poehling.

Nancy loved being a nurse and helping her patients. Her nursing career began at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital working in the operating room, ICU, and Special Procedures. She also served the La Crosse community as a public health nurse and as a nurse at the UW-La Crosse Student Health Center. Following her retirement, she volunteered at St. Clare's Health Mission. The family would like to thank all the medical staff who cared for Nancy at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, UW Madison Hospital, and Mayo St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. We will be forever grateful for the love and care they showed her during her hospitalization as well as the many friends and family that provided love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 6, at 11 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Visitation at the church from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Fr. Samuel McCarty will officiate and interment will be in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse

The family requests memorials be given to Gundersen Lutheran Foundation or a charity of your choice.
