Sister Pat (Alicita) Sheridan, FSPA

Oct. 7, 1927 - Nov. 19, 2021

LA CROSSE - Sister Pat (Alicita) Sheridan, FSPA, 94, died Friday, November 19, 2021, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, WI. She was in the seventy-fourth year of her religious profession.

Born on Oct. 7, 1927 in Sparta, WI, to William and Alice (Senogles) Sheridan, Sister Pat grew up in Kendall, WI. where her father worked for the Sheridan Lumber Company. She was the second eldest in her family which included two brothers and four sisters. Sister Pat professed her first vows as a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration in 1947.

Sister Pat's love for music and keen musical ability served as the basis for much of Sister Pat's ministry. She began her ministry as an elementary school music teacher in 1949: first in Spokane (St. Augustine), WA and then in La Crosse (Holy Trinity). After earning a bachelor's degree in music education from Viterbo College (University), La Crosse, Sister Pat taught high school music for 21 years in Ashland (De Padua) and La Crosse (Aquinas) in WI and Carroll (Kuemper) in IA. During that time, she completed a Master of Arts in Music Education from DePaul University, Chicago. Later, she taught elementary school and parish music in Tomah, WI, for five years. In 1995, Sister Pat became Director of Religious Education (DRE) at St. Joseph Parish (Kendall) and continued to serve as DRE and parish minister in Wisconsin at St. John the Baptist Parish (Wilton) and St. Patrick Parish (Elroy) until retiring five years later. Sister Patricia continued to minister in Elroy as a private music teacher and parish volunteer until moving to Villa St. Joseph in 2008.

Sister Pat was known for the rapport she had with students and the quality of performance she was able to elicit from them. Her musical productions were outstanding. In later years, her contributions to liturgy served as major contributions to Vatican II Church.

Sister Pat is survived by her Franciscan Community; her brother, William Jr. from Madison, WI; and her sisters: Joan (Jim) Sartori and Annette Thorson both from Elroy, WI, and Rita (Steve) Boehrer from Hales Corners, WI; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Terrance; and her sisters: Eileen Eberhardt and Donna Neuverth.

She was really a gift. Students just loved her and she got the very best from all of us who loved music, she had a knack for pulling out a talent a kid didn´t realize he or she had. I sing to this day with an excellent group of women in the San Francisco Bay Area because of her. She also trained my brother Mike to deliver the very best singing he could and to enjoy it. He and Tom Bloss did some singing as teens that would stop traffic. I think they were right there at the pearlies singing her in to her eternal reward. Rest easy, Alicia! We love you!

Sister Alicita was my first music teacher, she started me on a old silver trumpet at 12 years of age, when I went through those huge swinging doors which took us from St Agnes grade school to DePadua high school, I continued my "music lessons" and participated in all the musical opportunities she gave to all of us at DePadua, we were so very lucky to have her. She was special !! She was an inspiration to me on several levels, as I am certain she was to so many throughout her career.

Ashland´s DePadua High former students of Sister Pat Wish to extend their sympathies to our beloved teacher´s family and the Sisters of her order. She was a tremendous influence on us and taught music in unique ways that included about 200 out 250 students. She is pictured on a mural on a building in Ashland depicting favorite people of the city´s parochial schools. God bless you, Sr. Pat as you have earned a place in Heaven.
