Sr. Janet Fischer

1937 - 2025

Sister Janet Fischer (Mary Alban), Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration (FSPA), 88, died on November 20, 2025, at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse, Wis. She was in the 66th year of her religious profession.

Janet Ann Fischer was born in Loyal, Wis. to George and Catherine (Brusky) Fischer on March 29, 1937. Janet entered the novitiate of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration on August 12, 1957, and received the name Sister Mary Alban. She later went back to her baptismal name. She made her first profession of vows as an FSPA on August 12, 1959.

Sister Janet ministered as a homemaker at convents in Milford, Iowa, and Prairie du Chien, Wis. While at St. Mary's, Prairie du Chien, Wis., she served as baker and in her free time would visit the sick. She also taught religious education classes. In 1967, she helped in the bakery at St. Rose Convent and served as a chauffeur till 1980. She was then invited to minister in Claxton, Ga. in social services. Over the years at St. Christopher Parish in Claxton, Sister Janet's position changed from parish ministry to pastoral associate until she retired in 2012. Sister Janet continued to volunteer at the parish and surrounding area in Claxton for another 13 years before she moved to St. Rose Convent in the summer of 2025.

Sister Janet is survived by her religious community and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: George III, Donald and Charles Fischer and her sister Rita Fischer.

A memorial service will be held for Sister Janet at 3:30 p.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel on Monday, November 24. A virtual sharing will take place at 6:30 p.m. that evening. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 25, at 10 a.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel. Burial will be at Beaver Cemetery in Loyal, Wis. Dickinson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
