My condolences to the Rupf family. I was very saddenened to hear the news as I met Sherrif Rupf several times and he was always a friendly and great guy to have conversations with. I played in the Warren Rupf golf tournies out at Discovery bay and we always had a fun day reflecting on Mr. Rupf's contributions in the county. Warren - you will be missed sorely but your contributions to making our community a better place will live on forever.

It will always impress me that Sheriff Rupf took the time to personally come to a small town charitable foundation to discuss the need for School Resource Officer funding. He was a very down to earth person in his service to our community. Rest in Peace.

I will never forget the day I met him in that small airport cafe. A towering man in blue jeans and a flannel shirt. He was a man of great prescence even casually dressed. After talking with him for 5 minutes; he made me feel at ease; like I was talking with a man I had known for a long time. Even on days off, in small cafes, he was "the Sheriff" conducting buisness for the department. I will cherish the picture he made sure I received of him handing me my badge after swearing me in for office. He without a doubt changed the course of my life on that day. On another note, it took a while for Sheriff's Deputies from another agency to figure out who the towering man was anonymously picking up their bill as he slipped out of eateries in this small country town.
He was a remarkable man that will be greatly missed by his large extended family of men and women for whom he was a strong, gracious and steady leader.

After working in the Contra Costa Crime lab for 27 years, I moved to the ATF Crime Lab in Walnut Creek, where I stayed for 15 years. In 2008, I asked Warren if he would approve of me returning to the Contra Costa Lab as a contract Firearms Examiner. He took time to drive to the ATF Lab and over lunch told me that he would be happy to have me return to his crime lab. I will be eternally grateful to him for his support and all that he did, over the years, to support forensic science in Contra Costa County. But, above all else, I will really miss him as a friend.

I was a SAVES Volunteer back in the 90's at The Contra Costa Crime Lab. I have a very sick child who was born back then. I used my respite to help others and to take my mind off my own personal stuff. Thank you for giving me the opportunity for those 2 1/2 years to be surrounded by Karen and our crew. I loved it! Sorry to see you leave but your family must know that those times for me were cherished. They were therapy. I will pray for your family and friends.

My condolences Carole to you and your family. Warren was a very dedicated and caring person. I knew him when I was on the Contra Costa County Grand Jury 1997-98. Shortly before he retired he attended a reception for the AC-5 Art Group in the Administration Building. He was very supportive of the Art community. My husband had some of his art work on display and I was able to introduce George to Warren. Warren was very complimentary about the art. Warren was a very special individual and I am sure that your family knows how much he contributed to all. He will be missed.

"LARGER than life." That is how Gayle succinctly expressed her impression of Warren and I have to whole-heartedly agree! Warren was a big man in physical stature, quick mind and inquiring intellect. He always fascinated me with his ability to come at a problem or view a solution from some "left field" perspective.
I have fond memories of working with both Carole and Warren in the Detective Division before they were married and I can honestly say I learned many life lessons serving as a subordinate to Warren. We were both thrilled to read in Jon Cox's message that Warren was a believer in Jesus Christ, so we look forward to many more conversations with Warren in heaven.
Carole .... what a classy lady! We can only imagine your grief but want you to know we hold you in our arms up here in Oregon.

"Shiny Shoes" always made me proud of my badge, my uniform and all for which he stood. Like any leader, I didn't always agree with him, but my husband Jim and I always respected him deeply because his decisions came from the heart. As a dispatcher, he was responsible for promoting me to Supervisor, an experience which changed my life. Jim, as a Deputy Sheriff, always felt the utmost respect for him and appreciated his honesty and fairness over the years. We all have our special memories of the 'BOSS' (borrowed)don't we? Mine occurred during a visit from Idaho in March 2004, many years after retirement. We visited for awhile reflecting on past years before the Sheriff had to leave to keep a very important appointment in Concord.
The Sheriff was in full class A uniform. It seemed his appointment was to visit a elementary school and read to a class of little children.
Can't you just see that GIANT sitting down surrounded by little children at eye level, reading at their level also? What a compassionate heart! He counted such events as investments for the future. Visualizing the scene and this overwhelming man sorta gave me a lump in the throat.
You have left an indelible mark on this County BOSS and etched on many hearts as well.

I had met Warren when he was an Asst. Scout Master when my son and his were in the Cub Scouts. All the kids looked up to him as a leader. When I went to work for the County I used to ask him teasingly when he was going to find me a job in the Sheriff's Office. I'll be darned, he did. With his help I was transferred along with my Program to the S.O. and spent 15 years there. I can say that I loved my job and respected his dedication to the community. In law enforcement, it is impossible to hide a poor reputation from others in the business. Likewise, you can't hide a good reputation. either. Sheriff Rupf had an excellent reputation that was known throughout Calif. He was known for his ethics, integrity, honesty, his love of the CCCSO,and yes, his love of the Marine Corp. He has left all of us an example of how to live and how to face death. What a man and what a cop!

I was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff in 1969 and had the pleasure of working with Deputy Sheriff Warren Rupf on many occasions. He was a very professional law enforcement officer, and I knew then that he would become a leader in the Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Rupf was more than the leader of an organizatio, because he truly cared for each and every member of his beloved Sheriff's Office, he was a loyal, true and and a very caring person; he was a "Friend to all, and he was my Brother."
Loyal to each and everyone of us, and as a Person and a "Former Marine he optimized the term "Semper Fi" - (Always Faithful).
Sheriff Rupf was "Always Faithful" to the Marine Corps, the Contra Costa County the Office of the Sheriff, and those who served with him.
Sherrif Rupf cared "Deeply" for us all, he was not only my Friend, he was also my Brother and I Love Him Dearly.

A very sad day for all of Contra Costa County! I would like to say it was a great honor and privilege to serve for almost 20 years under the leadership of Sheriff Rupf . He was always a fair and caring person.
May he rest in the arms of God!

My Sheriff was the best person I ever worked for. He was a great man who cared about every one of his personnel. Even some of us that sometimes made his job more difficult. No one in law enforcement ever taught me more than he did. Next to my Dad alone, Sheriff Rupf was the most impacting mentor and teacher in my life. I would not have had the success as a law enforcement leader and police chief that I am blessed with today without his hand on me. My only peace is in knowing that he was a believer in Jesus Christ and through that relationship has salvation with our God with no more pain or hurts. I will miss you very much Sheriff, and will continue to think back on our many conversations about life. I will be praying for Carole and the entire family for the peace that only GOD can provide. You will always be a part of the Office of the Sheriff Family and we love you.With all my sincere respect, Jon Cox

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
