Edith Watts Obituary

La Jolla Long time La Jolla resident, Edie Bryant Watts, died September 22, 2015, in her apartment at the Casa de Maana. She, along with her late husband Robert C. Watts, were active members of the La Jolla community for many years. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina, graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston and attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA.They were married at St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor and returned to La Jolla after the war to raise their family. She was an active member and past president of Las Patronas, served on the board of Scripps Memorial Hospital and served twenty years as a volunteer there, the Altar Guild at St. James and Meals on Wheels. Upon the death of her husband she became a successful real estate agent at the Willis M Allen Company. Later in life she was an active volunteer to San Diego Hospice until she was no longer comfortable with the drive and became an indispensible part of the volunteer family at the Ark Antiques for Animal Charities on Girard Avenue. She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and many Cairn terriers all named Megan or Dugan. She is survived by her three children, Gale of Camden, ME, Candy (Douglas) Waldron of Santa Ynez, CA, and Robert (Susan) Watts of Escondido, CA; five grandchildren, Alison Bryant (Aaron Napoleon) of Vermont, Rand (Hillary) Waldron of Virginia, Meagan Waldron of Santa Ynez, Ashley (Michael) Blankier of Los Angeles, and Alexis Watts of Brooklyn, NY; and four great-grandchildren.She lived a long, giving life and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her children want to especially thank all the wonderful staff at the Casa de Maana who did so much to make her comfortable the last years of her life. We also thank her special friends, Linda Strauss, Karen Speidel and Rae Merhar, who were her local daughters these last years. At her request, there will be no services but remembrances may be made in her memory to her favorite charity, Ark Antiques for Animal Charities, La Jolla. Edie was like a 2nd mother to me. My parents, Betty and John Rice passed away very young. Edie let me live with her and my 3 girls, when we moved back from FLA for a month till we could find a place to live. I will always remember her cottage cheese with Frito chips!!!!
I am glad that she went fast and pain free. I will always remember her in my heart and as her daughter also. I MISS YOU EDIE!!!! SUKEY RICE RIDGWAY

Edie was a close friend of my mother, Dolores (Smith) King, especially after they became next door neighbors on Calle del Oro in the early 70s. As such, Edie was a major and vital part of my life, always warm, friendly and happy to chat and exchange reminiscences with me on the many occasions I went next door to visit. On more than one occasion she even hosted both me and my hyperactive toddler of a son when he got to be too much for his grandparents - a true sign of friendship if ever there was one! Edie was truly my favorite among all of my mother's many friends and I will miss her very much.
