F. Convery Obituary

F. Richard Convery, M.D. June 12, 1932 - July 1, 2018 La Jolla F. Richard Convery, M.D., age 86, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2018 in Burlingame, CA, with his son Mark Convery at his side. Convery moved with his family to La Jolla in 1972 to take a position as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at UC San Diego - a position he held until his retirement in 1997. At UCSD, he was the quintessential gentleman academic surgeon, well-liked by his patients and influential to his residents. He improved the lives of thousands of patients through surgeries he performed, with his specialty being total hip replacements. He innovated new surgical materials and techniques and was an early pioneer in Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation for joint preservation. He trained many new surgeons and encouraged the most promising to pursue a career in joint reconstructive surgery.Convery was born in Olympia, WA, the son of Frederick Rudolph Convery and Frances Lockwood Convery. He was an Eagle Scout and went to school in Chehalis, WA before attending Centralia College and the University of Washington, where he received his undergraduate and medical degrees. He served his internship at Minneapolis General Hospital, his residency at the University of Washington and a fellowship at the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. He joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1967 before moving to UCSD. Convery won several academic awards from the American Orthopedic Association. In 1966, he was named one of five outstanding resident orthopedic surgeons in the United States and in 1972 he won the AOA Kappa Delta Award for most outstanding research paper. He had a special love for mountains and forests, which developed in his youth while working in the Olympic National Park. In his leisure, he enjoyed the outdoors and maintaining forested landscapes, which he did diligently at his homes in Julian, CA and Lake Tahoe. He took his family on many wonderful trips to our nation's national parks and to a succession of vacation homes in Lake Tahoe. He especially enjoyed planning these trips and would send brochures and information to family members beforehand so that they could plan their activities in these places that were special to him.He is survived by his children, Kristine Convery Giordano (Carl), Linda Neagley (David) and Mark Convery (Wendy Young); grandchildren, Gina Giordano, Erica Neagley, Daniel Neagley, Owen Convery and Carson Convery; and his wife, Martha Minteer Convery.Donations may be made in his name to the Wayne and June Akeson Endowed Fund for Orthopedic Education at UCSD. I always appreciated how much grandpa loved sharing his passions in life- especially for movies and travel! We used to spend hours as kids watching movies with grandpa. He also loved sharing his and grandma's travel photos. They were such a great travel duo! They conquered some of the world's most exotic destinations together. Sending lots of love to all of grandpa's family.

I was one of many orthopedic residents who benefitted from the orthopedic knowledge and wisdom of Dr. Convery. He provided many lessons in orthopedic care as well as physician responsibility for the welfare of patients entrusted to their care. I am grateful for his mentoring and grateful to his family for the time he dedicated to my education. May he enjoy the glories of a heavenly existence, where we hope to join him someday.

I am so sorry to learn of Dick's death. He was a wonderful man and brilliant doctor. Martha, you were a power couple in the best sense of the term. I have never forgotten your kindness to me many years ago.
