Judy Bailey Obituary

Judy Roberts Bailey was born
on June 27, 1944, and passed
away peacefully on May 12,
2010. She is survived by her loving
husband of 39 years, Bruce;
a sister, Laralee Roberts of
Grand Rapids, Ohio; and a
brother, George Roberts of Logansport,
Indiana.
Judy was a professional
model, a social worker and a
public defender, mentored by
two high profile members of the
legal profession - F. Lee Bailey
(no relation) and Melvin Belli. A
1970 graduate of the University
of Toledo, College of Law, she
entered a profession then dominated
by men and ultimately had
a highly successful career as an
attorney specializing in business
and family law. She was the first
woman to defend members of
the U.S. Armed Forces in court
martial cases in Europe.
Judy was also the first woman
hired by the Riverside County
Public Defender's Office in Riverside,
California. Later she moved
to La Jolla where she continued
her legal practice and became
president of the La Jolla Bar Association.
She was quoted as
saying, "as attorneys, we want to
bring about change in our society
by both preserving the good
things and changing the bad
things."
Judy was a member of Chaine
des Rotisseurs, La Jolla Chapter,
and a graduate of the Culinary
School at the Oriental Hotel in
Bangkok, Thailand, the German
Cooking School in Stuttgart and
the French Cooking School in
Paris.
A funeral mass in Judy's
honor will be held on Thursday,
May 20, 2010, at 3:00 pm at
Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic
Church in La Jolla. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests that
donations may be made to the
San Diego Humane Society,
5500 Gaines St., San Diego, CA
92110.

Bruce, Judy was loved by so many and we all share in your loss. She was beautiful inside and outside. I always see her with that beautiful smile and hear her soft soothing voice and her cute little laugh. . How honored I am to have called her friend. I will miss her so much. I just found out about the passing of Judy. I don't know what those of us who knew her will do without that big, beautiful smile. And that enormous spirit of unending belief and kindness. There will never be another "Judy Bailey'.

I am so very grateful to have known her and experienced that radiant 'sparkle' only she possesed.

UNCLE BRUCE,
WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU AND AUNT JUDY AS THE UNCLE AND AUNT WHO EVERYONE DREAMED OF HAVING. WHO ELSE COULD SAY THEIR UNCLE AND AUNT FLEW THEM AND THEIR 2 BROTHERS AND 2 SISTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY MANY TIMES-JUST TO SPOIL THEM ROTTEN ? HOW MANY UNCLES AND AUNTS WOULD DARE TO TAKE ON 5 KIDS UNDER 12 YEARS OLD FOR WEEKS DURING SUMMER VACATION ? YOU GOT US ALL ON THE SAILBOAT, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU KEPT US ALL FROM FALLING OFF. I CAN'T EVEN COOK T.V. DINNERS FOR MY 2 KIDS, BUT SOMEHOW THE TWO OF YOU COOKED HOME COOKED MEALS AND ENTERTAINED US AT A NEW PLACE EVERY DAY. I REMEMBER YOU TAKING US TO OUR FIRST TRIP TO DISNEYLAND (THAT WAS WHEN YOU NEEDED MULTIPLE TICKETS FOR EVERY RIDE). WHO ELSE CAN SAY THAT MY AUNT WON ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AS MY ATTORNEY ? WHO ELSE CAN SAY THEIR SUCCESSFUL UNCLE AND AUNT LEFT THEIR GLAMOROUS CALIFORNIA HOMES TO VISIT US IN GLOOMY TOLEDO, OHIO ? ONLY THE TWO OF YOU WOULD RESPOND TO THEIR GREAT NIECE'S SCHOOL PROJECT TO SEND DIRT, SO THE CLASS COULD STUDY HOW THINGS ARE DIFFERENT IN CALIFORNIA. THE TWO OF YOU HAVE ALWAYS GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR US. WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER AUNT JUDY FOR HER DETERMINATION. I KNOW STAGE 4 PANCREATIC CANCER IS EXTREMELY PAINFUL, BUT I NEVER HEARD EITHER OF YOU COMPLAIN. UNCLE BRUCE, WE WILL KEEP YOU IN OUR PRAYERS.
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF WE CAN EVER RETURN THE FAVOR. WE LOVE YOU.

Bruce, you celebrated life with Judy that others could only dream of. Judy did not just pass through, she lived her life to the fullest and made most of her dreams a reality. Her number one priority was making her husband smile and she achieved that. You two had fun together. She was the most amazing person I ever met. I cherish my friendship with her. I am saddened for your loss, but know that you were blessed to have a long, loving marriage and friendship.
