Mary Ann Francis Vitale, a beloved mother, grandmother, chef, and entrepreneur passed away on May 22nd, 2024 in La Jolla, California at the age of 77. She was born on February 12th, 1947, in Madison, Wisconsin to Saverio and Francis Fumusa.Mary Ann's life was defined by her passion for culinary arts and her unwavering dedication to sharing her love of food with others. Her journey began as a young girl watching her parents cook traditional Italian dishes in their kitchen. This early exposure sparked a lifelong love affair with cooking that would shape the course of Mary Ann's life.After honing her skills as a chef and restaurateur for many years, Mary Ann found joy in teaching others about the art of cooking. She established a curriculum for the Great News Cooking School where she inspired countless aspiring chefs with her knowledge and expertise. Her impact extended beyond the classroom as she mentored numerous individuals who went on to achieve great success in the culinary world.In pursuit of realizing her dream of creating an exceptional dining experience for her community, Mary Ann opened La Taverna restaurant followed by Sorella Della Taverna in La Jolla. These establishments quickly became renowned not only for their delectable cuisine but also for their warm hospitality - a reflection of Mary Ann's own generous spirit.Her commitment to excellence earned widespread acclaim from patrons near and far; however, it was always evident that Mary Ann took greatest pride in serving those within her home community - La Jolla - a place she not only called home but felt a deep connection with.She will be remembered not only for her culinary talents but also for being an extraordinary mentor who touched so many lives through food education and inspiration. Her legacy will live on through every dish prepared by those she taught or influenced - an enduring tribute to the indelible mark she left upon this world.As we mourn our loss today, let us also celebrate the incredible life lived by Mary Ann - a woman whose passion illuminated every meal served at table while warming hearts along the way.Services for Mary Ann will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday August 9, 2024.
