Edwin Hiner Obituary

Edwin L. Hiner passed away at 85 years of age on Saturday, Nov 12th in Rolling Hills Manor. A life-long Waukegan resident, Ed was born on March 29, 1931 at what was then Victory Hospital on Sheridan Road. He was raised just two blocks away on Hickory Street, attended Waukegan schools, and graduated from Waukegan High School in the class of 1949. From an early age, Ed placed a high value on work and held multiple jobs including paper boy (1941-44), flower delivery for Ricci's Flower Shop (1944-47), gas station worker & tow truck driver at Madman Joe's and Barnay's (1947-1951), and employee at Illinois Bell Telephone Company (1949-1952). In 1952, Ed went to work with his father Sam at Waukegan Roofing Company, and he was appointed President of the company after his dad's death in 1956 and he held that title until his retirement in 1998. Shortly before marrying his wife, Frances Heflin in 1957, Ed purchased a home on Golf Road where he lived for 59 years. Ed enjoyed spending weekends at a summer place in Wisconsin and wintered in Palm Desert, CA at his second home. Ed was heavily involved in community service during his lifetime, giving his time at one point as chairman of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army and also serving at different points in his life with the United Way of Lake County, his local Kiwanis Club, Meals on Wheels, and at his church. As a loving father and grandfather, Ed leaves his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren with many rich memories of times spent together. He adored his only daughter Melodee and was an incredibly caring father to her over the years. He also spent many weekends at his place in Wisconsin with his grandkids, as well as spending time with them at his winter home in California. He will be deeply missed by his family. Ed is proceeded in death by his wife Fran who passed away in May 2016. He is survived by his only child, Melodee (Jon) Sanchez of Jacksonville, FL, eight grandchildren, brother David (Karen) Hiner, niece, Susan Paulson, and nephew, Rob Hiner. A private memorial service will be held at North Shore Garden of Memories on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ed Hiner Memorial Fund to support scholarships for students in Africa: http://give.classy.org/edhinermemorialfund
