Joyce Sorenson

Sorenson, Joyce Marie 77, of Waukegan, IL, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at her daughter's home in Le Claire, Iowa. Joyce was born February 6, 1936, in Chicago, IL, and was a graduate of Deerfield High School, Deerfield, IL. She originally worked in the Lake County Sheriffs Department and then eventually retired from the North Chicago Medical College (now Rosalind Franklin University) where she was employed for about 18 years as the secretary for the Dean of Students. She was proud of her role in assisting medical student graduates with their residency letters, finding housing, and helping with the Cap and Gown ceremonies. Joyce was a long time member of the Waukegan Church of God where she taught Sunday School and was a second mother to many and later became a member of the Zion Church of God. She loved to sew and swim and was an active volunteer at Victory Memorial Hospital. Survivors include her children, Dennis (Sandra) Cowen of Beach Park, IL, Debra (William) Sorenson of Le Claire, lA, Darrell (Teressa) Cowen of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Diane Cowen of Kenosha, WI, Matthew (Karen) Sorenson of Mishawaka, IN, Barbara (John) Anderson of New Buffalo, MI, and Karin Sorenson of Grand Haven, MI; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Joan (Bob) Ruley of Lake Zurich, IL; 2 nieces; 2 nephews; and other close family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Sorenson; son, David Cowen; sister, Jean Lares; and parents, Howard and Genevieve Hutton. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 10:00 a.m at the Zion Church of God, 2700 Eshcol Ave., Zion, IL. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, IL.
