Hellen Carter Obituary
ROANOKE, VA: Hellen Johnson Carter, 91, of Roanoke, VA, and recently Lancaster, OH, went to be with her Lord on Saturday morning, January 31, 2015. Hellen was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and had served as organist and choir director for nine Baptist churches in the Roanoke area from 1945 through 1983. She worked as bookkeeper for Hobbie Brothers music store over 25 years. She retired as organist for Oakey's North Chapel after 37 years of service, and had continued to substitute for Oakey's Roanoke Chapel when needed following her retirement.
Hellen was preceded in death by her parents, Platt and Hattie McPeak Johnson; her husband of 63 years, Royce L. Carter; and brothers, Fred, Robert and Arthur Johnson. Surviving are her son, Wayne L. (Connie), Lancaster, OH; granddaughters, Rebecca (Jack) McGuire, Louisville, KY, Tricia (Steve) Krebs, Frisco, TX, Mandy (Jay Kaiser), Swannanoa, NC; three great-grandchildren, Andrew and Caroline Krebs and Amelia Kaiser. She is also survived by nephews, Bill (Norma) Johnson, Vinton, VA, Richard (Linda) Johnson, Bowling Green, KY; and niece, Darlene (Ray) Gravett, Boiling Springs, NC.
A funeral service celebrating Hellen's life will be held at Oakey's North Chapel, Friday, February 6, 2015, at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Claude D. Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 5, 2015, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Oakey's North Chapel. I enjoyed working with Hellen in the League of Roanoke Artists activities. She was missed when she moved out of the area and still is missed by her fellow artists. She was a wonderful person and friend.
