Richard Howey Obituary

Richard Lowell Howey 1937- Richard L. Howey of Laramie, died on October 8, 2023.

Richard was born in Lincoln, NE on December 10, 1937 to Lowell and Louise Howey. He attended Lincoln High School and the University of Nebraska where he was awarded the

Master of Arts Degree in 1960. Richard was married to Adrianne Ihms on July 30, 1960. After being awarded a National Defense Fellowship in 1960, he was awarded the Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Southern California in June of 1969. Previous to his retirement from the University of Wyoming in 2002, Richard served in several capacities. He was Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from January to December of 1975, and held joint appointments in Philosophy and Zoology from July, 1985 to December, 1990, and from January, 1994 until December, 1997.

Richard was admired by his students and colleagues alike. After 10 years of his ranking as the most popular professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, he was awarded the Ellbogen award for excellence in teaching, With a twinkle in his eye, he guided his students through critical reasoning, allowing them to consider positions they had never examined before. His pleasure in teaching remained steadfast throughout the years.

After retiring as a professor of philosophy in August of 2002, Richard embarked upon a new and satisfying career in amateur microscopy. His scores of illustrated articles on the subject are available on the online site, Micscape, UK. His passionate devotion to the subject led him to often declare that he wanted to make the world safe for microscopy. To this end, he refurbished and gave many 'scopes' away to young people who expressed an interest in the subject.

Above all, Richard will be remembered by his many students and friends as a wise, compassionate, kind, and generous friend. His sphere of interests was vast and in later years he took great pleasure in regaling friends with his witty sense of humor through the telling of jokes and anecdotes.

Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Adrianne Howey, of Laramie, WY, his sister, Margaret Rickers, of Lincoln, NE and several nieces and nephews. At the request of the family, there will be no services. Donations in Richard's memory may be made to Hospice of Laramie, 1754 Centennial Drive, Laramie, WY 82070 or online to Micscape.UK.org.
