Albert Stoffel Obituary

Stoffel, Albert Law
Al Stoffel, writer of the Bugs Bunny comic strip for over 25 years, died in Santa Monica on May 6, 2002. Mr. Stoffel, who was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on May 20, 1909, graduated from the University of Kentucky in Journalism in 1931. He began his career during the Great Depression, first as a newspaper reporter, then as a writer and photographer. He spent 1938 in Rome with his new bride, working in publicity at the Excelsior Hotel. Al joined the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer at the outbreak of World War II, and served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Following the War, he was a writer/editor with Western Publishing Company, helping to open the West Coast office which he headed until he retired in 1976. He was most proud of the Bugs Bunny comic strip and wrote many of the Golden Books for children. He coordinated projects and licensing with Walter Lanz, the Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Al's passion was golf, and he was an accomplished player and student of the game. In 1996, he lost his wife of fifty-eight years, Cathie. He leaves his children, Catherine Bunnell and Al Stoffel Jr.; grandchildren Alex and Chris Bunnell, Christy and Nick Stoffel and daughter-in-law, Sally. He was a member of The Riviera Country Club for more than 50 years, where a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to the American Heart Association or Collie Rescue.
