Albin Koch Obituary

Albin Cooper Koch died on May 16, 2025. He was the younger son of John Lester Koch and Theodosia Cooper Koch; beloved husband for 64 years to Harriet Woodworth Koch (d. 2024); brother to John L. Koch, Jr. (d. 2011); and loving uncle to John L. Koch, III (Amelia) of New Orleans, LA, David C. Koch (d. 2017), Sarah C. Koch of Glen Mills, PA, Douglas Woodworth (Abigail) of Allentown, PA, and Susan Henkel (Matt) of Sarasota, FL, as well as several great nephews and nieces. Albin grew up in Sewickley, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA, Yale University '56, and Harvard Law School '59. He had a long and rewarding career, working for various law firms, as a Judge Advocate General in the Air Force, and the IRS, before settling into private practice. In 1979, Albin and his wife bought their home of 45 years in Pasadena, CA. He was a patron of the arts, supporting the Los Angeles Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony, and The Huntington Museum and Library. He was an active member of All Saints Church in Pasadena. He and his wife enjoyed many evenings of live music in their local area and abroad, and often traveled to Europe where they enjoyed the walking tours, art history, and cuisine of many countries there. He also enjoyed his summer home on the shores of Nantucket, with his wife, her brother and family, and many visitors over the years. He spent a week each summer with his brother and family in the lakes region of New Hampshire where they had spent summers as boys. Albin was very practical in teaching his nephews and nieces the proper way to enjoy these times together, such as how to play a good game of "Taboo" (and win), how to enjoy breakfast on the water (read the paper first), and how to climb a 4000 foot mountain (don't sprain your ankle). In 2021, in memory of his wife's father George Wallace Woodworth, who was a music professor at Harvard, Albin and Harriet presented a real estate gift to Harvard, from the sale of their Nantucket home. This gift established the George Wallace Woodworth Graduate Research Fellowship in music to support future generations of Harvard musicians. The fellowship offers financial aid to one or more students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences interested in advanced study, performance, composition, or arrangement of classical music. Albin was charitable on many levels. He had a life long influence in the lives of his nephews, nieces, and their families. He will be missed very much. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA at a later date, with announcement forthcoming.
