Alice LeBel Obituary
LeBEL, Alice Aileen Hall Passed away at home in Pacific Palisades on August 19, 2006, following three years of living life fully while fighting ovarian cancer. A lifelong resident of Los Angeles, she was born on November 8, 1929. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Lionel LeBel; brother Emerson Hall of Ennis, Montana; son Bruce LeBel (Ellen); daughter Toni LeBel (Roger Patterson); granddaughters Allegra and Lauren Searle-LeBel, grandsons Kyle and Ryan Patterson; and numerous Hall and LeBel family members. Alice graduated from University High School in 1947 and earned her BA and Master's degrees in Political Science from UCLA. She taught this subject at Santa Monica College. Her education continued with a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from UCLA. She worked at UCLA Extension developing adult education courses, coauthored a book entitled "The Part-time Student in Higher Education Institutions", produced a public television series "The Family in Transition", and worked for Northrup-Grumman creating an extensive adult education program for employees. Her volunteer activities included fifty years as a member of Gold Shield, a UCLA Alumnae organization that awards scholarships. She also enjoyed several years as a docent at the Getty Museum and was a dedicated member of the local Democratic club. Alice's deep love of music began with piano lessons in childhood, continued as a singer in the Roger Wagner Chorale and was sustained by attending Philharmonic concerts. Alice was a wonderful cook, excelled at card playing and enjoyed numerous trips abroad. She cultivated many friendships and delighted in her family. A memorial gathering and reception will be held on Saturday September 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Community Church, 1260 18th St., Santa Monica. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Gold Shield, P.O. Box 84-493, Los Angeles, CA 90073, payable to UCLA Foundation/Gold Shield for a scholarship in memory of Alice LeBel. Donations may also be made to World Shelters, a non-profit organization providing shelter for humanitarian needs, at 550 South G St., Arcata, CA 95521.
