Arthur Secunda

1927 - 2022

November 12, 1927 - August 30, 2022 The much beloved, internationally known artist, Arthur Secunda, passed away August 30th at 94. He leaves behind two sons - David and Alexandre and their families, Carmela, Paloma, Eliana, and Mia, former wives, Gladys and Sandra, and a myriad of artists he mentored and inspired.
Born November 12, 1927 as the Holland tunnel opened, his parents, newly arrived Russian immigrants, subsequently named him Holland Arthur Secunda. Arthur lived in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, Mexico and across Europe, though Paris would always be the home of his heart. He collaborated with close friends and artists including Ray Johnson, Mel Edwards, Federic Jacques Temple, and Henry Miller. His work is in the permanent collections at the MOMA, Detroit Institute of Arts, Art Institute of Chicago and he was featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art and LACMA, in addition to his numerous solo exhibits worldwide. His extensive body of work is memorialized at Michigan's Arthur Secunda Museum at Cleary University, established in 2012.
Secunda was renowned for his striking collage graphics, but his oeuvre spans prints, paintings, sculpture, curatoring and teaching. After a rich, vibrant, and creative life, this genius has left us a beautiful and powerful legacy.
