Barbara Drew Obituary

Drew, Barbara Long time actress whose most memorable film role was as Tony Curtis' girlfriend, Nellie, in the 1960 classic "Some Like It Hot" died of complications from a stroke on September 17th. She was 83. Born in the Panama Canal Zone and raised in South America, she came to Miami as a young woman where she met and married Worthington Hipple (brother of late actor Hugh Marlowe, "All About Eve"). They moved to Chicago where she started her career in radio on WGN in "The Wishing Well". After her divorce in 1948 she moved to New York to study acting, which eventually led to roles on the Broadway stage in "Voice of the Turtle" and "La Fortza del Destino". In 1958 she moved to Hollywood and played various roles in many popular TV series such as "I Love Lucy". She was in the Pasadena Playhose production of "Bus Stop" and "Holiday for Lovers". In addition to her movie and TV career, she studied with the late Sherman Marks at his actors workshop in Hollywood which she helped run. In 1979 she married Louis Lubin and continued to entertain in various musical stage productions with the Theatre Arts Production of the City of Los Angeles (TAPLA). Mr. Lubin passed away in 1994. Barbara Drew is survived by her daughter, Judy Grant of Irvine, California. Contributions may be made to the Actor's Fund, New York City, or to the Pasadena Playhouse.
