Barwyn Browne Obituary

Barwyn William Browne, known to his friends as "B.W.," passed away peacefully on July 31st. Born in Murphysboro, Illinois, on February 16, 1931, Barwyn was a man whose life was shaped by deep family ties, a love for education, an interest in politics, and a profound appreciation for the arts and the environment.

Barwyn was the son of Glenn W. Browne and Helen Augusta Mileur. As a young man, Barwyn moved with his family to Los Angeles, California, where he attended Central Junior High, Belmont High School and eventually Glendale College. It was during these years that he developed a lifelong passion for Scottish culture and an interest in military service, which led to his involvement with the ROTC and then enlisting in the National Guard 40th Infantry Division.

After his tour of duty in Japan, Barwyn pursued a career in teaching, a profession he remained passionate about until his retirement from Sylmar High School in the 1990s.

He married Shirley Louise Siragusa on July 7, 1956, and had three daughters, Diane, Pamela, and Laura. His family was his pride and joy, and he passed on his love for Scottish heritage and culture to them, a legacy that lives on through The Browne Sisters and George Cavanaugh, who have delighted audiences for years with their harmonious performances at Celtic Festivals and Concerts.

Barwyn will be remembered for his wisdom, his sincere social consciousness, his many creative gifts, and his unwavering love for his family.

He is survived by his sister Jacqueline Cavanaugh, his wife Shirley, his daughters Diane, Pamela, and Laura, and grandchildren Sean, Faith, Emily, and William.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sierra Club, a cause close to Barwyn's heart.

Bary was both a relative and friend, and I´ll miss him. My late wife of 51 years, Mary Rose, was his cousin. I met him in 1953 when Mary Rose was staying with his mom in an apartment on 4th St. in LA. Bary played the bagpipes in their closet so the noise wouldn´t disturb the other residents, but still received complaints from up to a block away. He helped me get a summer job with his company, California Hardware in LA. At that time, he talked about having recently been stationed in Japan in the army during the Korean War. Later he finished college on the GI bill and had a good teaching career, which he humorously referred to as "zookeeping". He was justifiably proud of his excellent family and of his Scottish roots.
