Bruce Corwin Obituary

June 11, 1940 - November 4, 2021 On November 4, 2021, Bruce Conrad Corwin's eighty-one year long "Relentless Optimism" tour ended. One of the true mensches among us, Bruce was powered by kindness, empathy, and passion. Tipping the scales at three pounds, nine ounces, Bruce entered the world on June 11, 1940, alongside his beloved Gemini twin sister Bonnie. After graduating from LA High, Bruce headed east to Wesleyan University, where he majored in political science, played squash, and built lifelong relationships. He became the third generation of Metropolitan Theatres, a privately held company owned by the Corwin family since 1923. Bruce shared fifty-four years of an incredible life filled with laughter, love, friends, family and many spirited dogs with his great love and fierce protector, Toni. He adored his two sons, David and Danny, their wives Kara and Zoe, and his five beloved grandchildren-Dorrit, Teva, Hannah, Jesse and Emmett-who all loved him fiercely. A seemingly effortless force of nature, Bruce loved Passover with his family and friends, any baseball game, all Bruin victories, and a chocolate milkshake with coffee ice cream. The ultimate connector of people and causes, Bruce thrived on mentoring and building relationships. His license plate "PEOPLE" truly says it all. We were incredibly fortunate to have shared him with so many people. A service for the community will take place on Sunday, November 7, at 3 pm, at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills and will also be streamed on the temple's Facebook and YouTube pages. In lieu of flowers or food, please consider performing an extra act of human kindness in Bruce's honor. Memories and condolences may be shared to [email protected].

I have long lasting memories of Bruce as he was my little league coach and my impressionable years. Bruce held guide and coach with passion and compassion. I played competitive sports through college and Bruce remained my most revered coach. I had the good fortune to see Bruce on occasion at an event or around town and he always was warm and caring. I will always have fond memories of my time with Bruce on the diamond at Roxbury Park.

Bruce was among the first people I met more than 50 years ago when I moved to Los Angeles, and he and a roommate lived upstairs in my apartment building. Over all these years, we would meet often for lunch to try and solve the world's problems. We worked together at People, Inc., a group of activists and others he put together to launch a movie theater in Watts, and his Metropolitan Theatres office, with its baseball and political memorabilia, was among my very favorite places to visit. I was unaware he had died until a few days ago, and I feel a great Los Angeles leader, with a very big heart, is now lost to us. My condolences to Toni Corwin and the rest of his family.

There are no words to convey our sympathies. Bruce was the real deal and always a mensch, and an ear to listen and to get good advice from a gentle soul. Toni, although the world has lost a giant, you and your family has lost Bruce and his perpetual smile. We are so sorry. Every memory in my brain is of Bruce and his grin. Walking away from his hug always left me smiling; even single time. We are all going to be so lost without him. Dr. Seuss tells us, "Don't cry because it's over; Smile because it happened." His memory will be forever.
