Dear Helen and Family
I will ever remember your family with the greatest fondness. In 1975/6, I was a long way from Canada, alone in a strange country, and Arthur and Mildred McGregor took me in. I was their chauffeur for over a year, driving them to their appointments, to visit relatives, and buy groceries. They treated me like their own son, and I grew to love them like a son should. Through them, I met all their children, their grandchildren, and many close relatives. Through that association, I came to know what a Celestial family could be. I vividly remember spending a Thanksgiving with your family at San Marino. It was a beautiful setting, Helen, and a wonderful meal. I was well-prepared for the feast, as Sis. McGregor had forewarned me that Helen was an excellent cook! She also told me that during the first year of her marriage to Bruce, he was never served the same meal twice. Bruce was a very blessed man to have a wife like you. Sixty years you have been together, but it's only a moment in the eternities. You will be together again, this time for ever. I also remember your children, Julie, about fifteen, and such a lovely young lady, and Scott, a typical teenage boy, and who could forget Shawna, one of the sweetest little girls, who was so kind to this stranger? And little Mark, just six, such a darling boy. I wanted a son just like him. Then, there was little Eric. I recall two music recitals we attended while I was in California, one at the home of the children's music teacher, and the other at the home of the Glanceys. It was that night I learned that Sis. Glancey and I were distant relatives. Small world!
Bruce was a wonderful gentleman, quiet-spoken, and kind. He radiated goodness. I tried to keep in touch over the years, and occasionally I contacted him about a new Church book I was enthusiastic about. He was a student of the Gospel, whose studies went well beyond the SS manual. If all men were as good as he was and is, this world would be a paradise.
Much has happened in the years since I was in California. I finally married late in life and now have two sons of my own, and a precious daughter. My younger son is preparing to serve in the Spanish-speaking Sacramento California Mission. My testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains strong, and one day I hope to meet you all again on the other side of the veil. May God bless you in this time of grief and bring you peace in your sorrow.
Sincere Regards
