UPHOFF, Chauncey Warren
Also unknown as C.B. Boff died Dec. 14, 2004 in Boulder, CO. Chauncey, born in Jan 4, 1940 in Flora, ILL was the only son of Julianna Crippin Uphoff and Chauncey Milton Uphoff. Chauncey was an independent contractor in orbital mechanics in the So. Ca. area for many years before moving to Niwot, CO. There he founded Fortune Eight, Aerospace Industries Inc. Chauncey is survived by his loving Mother, Julianna; his adoring wife Linda Dorn Uphoff and his four children: Vandy of Pasadena, CA., Karinda of Boulder, CO. and Ryan and Christina of Niwot, CO. Funeral services Will be Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Crist Mortuary in Boulder, with a viewing from noon until 2:00. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to The Chauncey Uphoff Memorial Fund, Firstbank of Boulder, 6500 Lookout Rd., Boulder, CO. 80301 which is to be used as an education fund for his children.

It's has been quite a while but I still think of Chauncey at times. He encouraged me to become the person I am today. I only knew Chauncey for a short while, I met Him and Linda as a teen through a relative, then only spent a few times with him through the years as an adult. But he made me dream of greater things and think, Chauncey wanted everyone he knew to think. What amazed me most was not his incredible genius and accomplishments, it was his incredible ability to make me feel comfortable and (not) inferior. He was so amazing and interesting to listen to and be around it is impossible to put into words. I count myself blessed and honored to have know him. I will cherish his memory and brag to have know him all of my days!! Standing in the room with him, to me, was like a rock standing next to the sun.

My dad was a great man and finally became the daddy I'd always wanted. I miss him and love him very much. His faith in my mathematical skills warmed my heart and will forever give me hope that I might live the legacy that he left behind.

Chauncey and I worked together during the late '60s at McDonnell Douglas & had a lot of fun. During the 2 yrs prior to his death, we teamed again by long distance. In May of 03, he came to my birthday party - the last time I saw him in person. I am a baritone, but Chauncey made me feel like a tenor. I consider myself a free spirit, but Chauncey made me feel hopelessly traditional. He knew how to time share life and fun, and enriched the life of every person he met.

I only knew Chauncey through his wife Linda. Linda became a good friend during our adoption trip to China.

Linda obviously respected and loved Chauncey enormously and I know she misses him every minute.

Chauncey taught me several things in regards to mission design. The most important thing he taught me was I knew what I was doing for the most part. I enjoyed the many conversations we had for the year and a half I knew him. We talked about many a subject. I remember how he talked fondly of his wife, children, and mother. It was allways aparent he loved his family. I will miss him as I'm sure other friends and family will.

Chauncey was one of the great mission designers and I'll miss him. He was exceptionally creative in finding and understanding new kinds of trajectories; worth mentioning are lunar cycler orbits, based on his lunar backflip trajectory, which may be especially useful to future manned exploration. And I will be forever grateful to him for really showing me that "Space is Big."

Chauncey's passing brings back the days at JPL when he and I were figuring out how to exploit orbit pumping and cranking and what the limits were. We were such a complementary team, he had great intuition with calculus and could see constaints that I could not, and I could see geometric constraints that he did not. We learned from each other. The Galileo and Cassini missions are part of his legacy from those days. I will miss him.

Chauncey was a childhood friend of mine from his hometown of Flora,Il. His mother, who will be 93 on Dec. 28, is also a life long friend and teacher of mine. Chauncey will be missed by his classmates of 1958.

We met Chauncey when we were preparing to travel to China to adopt our daughter. Our little girls are from the same SWI in China and we have kept in contact with his family over the past couple of years. Our heartfelt condolances to Linda, Ryan and Christina. Chauncey will be missed.

Chauncey recently taught a course in astronautics at CU, Boulder. I wasn't in his class, but gave a presentation to his class. Chauncey was definitely a story teller, and all of my classmates knew him as such. I first met Chauncey in the late 70's in JPL's Section 312 (basically "trajectories and stuff"). He was certainly a delightful, unique, and brilliant character. We benefited greatly from both his wisdom and wit. My sincere condolences to his wife and children. They can take comfort in knowing that Chauncey was a wonderful character that brought to so many of us in the space business knowledge with remarkably good humor. He will be greatly missed.
