Dale Robertson Obituary

Robertson, Dale L.
July 14, 1923 - February 26, 2013
Dale L. Robertson was born on July 14, 1923. He passed away Feb. 26, 2013 from complications of lung cancer and pneumonia. He was born in Harrah, OK to Varval and Melvin Robertson. Dale attended Classen High School in Oklahoma City. As he started his junior year, he was declared ineligible to participate in sports because he had fought in two professional boxing fights. He therefore decided to enroll in the Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore OK in which he could participate in sports. While attending, he was nominated All Around Athlete. When he was in his first year of college, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and thrust the U.S. into WWII. Dale, along with some of his friends signed up, and thus he started his military service in Ft. Sill OK. He was then sent to the horse cavalry at Ft. Riley, KS. From there to Ft. Knox, KY to officers school where he was commissioned a Second Lt. in the Armed Forces. Afterwards, he was sent to the Engineer School at Ft. Belvoir, VA. He was later wounded in Germany near the end of the war while serving with the 322nd combat Engineer Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star and is considered as one of The Greatest Generation. Dale was discovered by Fox Studios from a photo he made for his mother in North Hollywood, CA which was displayed in a window at a photo shop. He was signed to a multi-film contract. Dale was a true cowboy and starred in mostly westerns, with a few exceptions as in Son of Sinbad with Vincent Price, Fast and Sexy with Gina Lolabrigida, Take Care of My Little Girl with Jeannie Crain and Call me Mister with Betty Grable. He was most well known for his long running series, Tales of Wells Fargo. He went on to make the Iron Horse and hosted Death Valley Days. He also co-starred in Dynasty and Dallas. Again, he starred in his own series, JJ Starbuck. He was beloved by the public and his friends for his down home values and for what he represented as a man. He was adored by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, his daughter Rochelle Robertson and granddaughter Jade Angelica Fusco Robertson. Dale treasured his family and placed deep emphasis on the value of his friends who were the love of his life and was his motivating factor.
He was cremated and his Memorial Service will be on April 14, 2013, 2PM at the Village Community Presbyterian Church: 6225 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067. May your memories of Father and Grandfather be forever filled with joy. We are western pictures lovers and came to know more about Dale Robinson as an Actor that loved to play western on some of the cable channels. Most celebrates Actors / Cowboys western movies by playing their movie all week or on a certain day or throughout the month. I know that the family miss him much but, time will pass to lessen the sorrow in your heart .

Thought today about a time about 1979. It was Chech day in Yukon, Ok. I was at Jerry Rice's Texaco station with my daughter who was almost 4 years old. I noticed as she waited in the office that a tall, grey haired man in a Linen colored Western suit and a light colored felt cowboy hat, was carrying on a conversation with her. The man turned as I walked in the office from the garage to talk to Mr. Rice and the gentleman said "Mom...Would it be Ok if I bought her a candy bar". What could I say. I thought the voice was familiar, but I did not know why. Later that day when I picked up my car Jerry asked me if I recognized the man from earlier in the day.. He said he played in Tales of Wells Fargo. I knew then and was so excited and said oh my gosh... Dale Robertson. Truly made my day. I had only told him that would be fine and we both thanked him. I still enjoy seeing his shows today as well. He was truly a gracious kind man. Blessed for even getting to run into him on that day. I will always remember his heart and stature forever. May he forever ride his faithful Jubilee as he graces your memory. He too was a special breed. One of the last of his kind. I only wish I had wrote this sooner.

Mr. Robertson is in a special category as an on-screen cowboy and real-life genuine horseman. Mr. Robertsons honest and genuine Southern verve was charming, lovable and un-mistakeable. Though I remember Dale from my childhood (probably from Iron Horse) I discovered Tales of Wells Fargo relatively recently and thoroughly enjoy each episode as I make my way through the entire series. As a Western affecionado and a fellow horseman, I continue to watch the show regularly, in amazement of Dales riding, the fabulous Jubilee and, of course, the no non-sense, just-overall good guy that he personified as Jim Hardie! I also very much enjoyed Dales book Wells Fargo, The Legend and I look forward to reading Bucking Hollywood by Mrs. Robertson. This Italian-American kid from Frisco looks forward to gittin some pointers fromem on the other side. My deepest condolences to the Robertson family; you and Dale are in my prayers. May God Bless all of you.

Reading all the wonderful tributes truly fetched a tear; he was truly one of a kind, without a doubt. He was the guest star at the Grand National Horse Show/Rodeo at the Cow Palace in the mid-50's; what a thrill it was to see him ride into the arena, in person, in the spotlight. He was our hero in so many ways. Colonel & Mrs. Marvin Del Chiaro

If my memory is correct (and it may not be since I am 76 years old!),Dale and the Hollywood All Stars came to town for a softball game against the #1 woman's team in the City for whom I was the pitcher. They won, of course, but it was fairly close! Yes, Dale was a gentleman and I hope to see him "upstairs."
